There are 85 000 species of flies, and the Australian bushfly is
probably the worst. They tyrannise the outback, they torture, they are
excised from tourist brochures. They also cause ophthalmia,
inflammation of the eyes and often blindness. The poo pads of
Australia’s 20 odd million sheep and cattle are often blamed. Not
true. This pest was there before white man was. Despite their bother
it’s quite amusing to read what happened when flies met Australia’s
early explorers who breathed flies and ate flies and hated them at

All I know about Australia is what I saw on the Crocodile
Hunter. But they do seem to have a whole array of "bugs"
that are more annoying, more persistent, more energetic,
and more numerous, than the usual bug I meet in Ontario.
The worst I meet is mosquitos and black flies. And if I bring
a whackload of DEET it's usually acceptable. I've never had
to resort to the bug hat and bug shirt, even though I usually
carry them.
