Thanks for the tip, but I can't believe it's really that bad. No good bars?
No good cafes? No market halls?

long does it take to drive from Winnepeg to Toronto or Winnepeg to Edmonton
or to Montreal if I decide to do that?
Erich
According to Greyhound.ca, it takes 30 about hours from Winnipeg to Toronto.
Winnipeg to edmonton is about 20 hours, Winnipeg to Montreal is about 35
hours.
These times are on schedule and includes stops for meals/driver changes/bus
changes.
Your actual driving time may be a faster/slower depending on your driving
style.
The Winnipeg to Toronto time will vary depending on the route you take.
Greyhound goes to Thunder Bay, then along North Shore of Lake Superior to
Sudbury and may have "Flag" stops at many of the towns it passes through.
After
the stop at Sudbury, its a 6 hr non stop to Toronto. You might choose to
backtrack through the US and cross again at Port Huron or Detroit into
Toronto.
(shorter).
(If you do decide on Toronto and/or Montreal, I would head towards Chicago
then
to turn east towards Toronto. I would then take the northern route through
North Bay and Sudbury to Winnipeg before heading home.
No, these driving times are not correct, unless you plan on making a
stop in every tiny little town or 'hamlet' along the way, like
greyhound does.
Driving time from Winnipeg to Edmonton is about 13.5 hours, around
there. Edmonton is nice, Winnipeg is not (boring and ugly).
Driving time from Winnipeg to Toronto is about 20-22 hours depending
on route, so it's best to make it in two days or more if you actually
want to see some of the route there. If you were referring to Lake
Winnipeg, might I suggest my private little spot? Patricia beach just
a few k's north on the east side. Beautiful, with sand bars going far,
far out so swimming is a blast.
Have a good trip and look for us along the road, we are taking a
cross-canada tour! |

My wife and I brought our car, and then found it was superfluous.
Everything we wanted to see was on a bus line.

I, on the other hand, am very fond of Victoria, but I agree that it's not
worth splitting so little time between two cities, especially as the ferry
ride will not seem like much after an Alaskan cruise. There's plenty to do
in Vancouver for four days. Hell, I've been here 16 years and still have
things to do. |

Quote: A NEW MACHINE INVENTED
My name is Ron Kliewer and I am president of a small company called
Innovative Surface Solutions International Inc.
I am writing this letter to introduce you to a new kind of floor grinding
and finishing machine I have been working
on for the past 4 years with 320,000.00 invested. It has 8 four inch
diameter velcro pads on the bottom of the machine.
Four spin clockwise and four spin counter clockwise which in turn makes
for
a super stable running machine. With different
types and grits of pads virtually any kind of floor can be ground and
polished including hardwood, concrete, marble, terrazzo,
fibreglass and even epoxy paint.
The web site is as follows: http://publish.shaw.ca/nytrus54/
The machine has been entirely built on a computer using a program called
IRONCAD. It is a dream to use, very well
built and the potential is just there I know it. I invested so much of my
funds that I ended up losing my company that
I built up over the last 14 years, I had to sell it for pennies on the
dollar and now I am manufacturing these machines
one at a time in my garage. Things are real tight but I am not giving up
on
this, the machine is truly needed in the industry
and if I can just hang on for a bit longer I know this will really take
off.
You probably know of someone who had a real good idea but it never got
off
the ground. Why? He ended up just
giving up because of costs of research and developement. Well I refuse to
give up. Can YOU help?
You are most likely wondering "what can I do to help? I am not in the
floor
industry and never will be." True, but could you help to
keep me going? Could you send 1, 2, or 5 dollars?
I know, I know, you are thinking "Crap, this guy is begging on the
internet."
Well sad to say maybe you are right. Put yourself though in my position,
the bank will not lend me anymore money, venture capital
companies rob you blind, sure I could just temporarily close up and get a
job pumping gas but that is a last resort, and I know then it would die.
I truly know and feel that this machine could be in every rental store in
North America, it is needed.
Help me to carry it through. Could you help?
Here is my address:
I.S.S. International
2220 Tolmie Ave.
Coquitlam, B.C.
Canada

Kind regards, Ron Kliewer
P.S. Imagine going into a rental store and seeing my machine! You could
quietly say to yourself "I helped that guy out, looks like he did it!"

Definitely no car required in Victoria -just walk around. BTW a previous
respondent referred to "bouchard gardens"- there is no such place - its
called Butchart gardens. Didnt want you wasting time trying to figure out
what he meant- and yes you need a bus to get there. If you want to see any
portion of the island you would need a car but I think I recall from a
previous post you are only going for short time so just walk , relax enjoy.
You see more walking then driving anyway.

I drive Edmonton to Winnipeg and back quite often. 13 to 15 hours depending
on the traffic and stops. Travel the Yellow Head, Hwy 16, and bring your own
music.

The "town" of Vancouver has a city population of over 500,000, with over
1,500,000 people within an hours drive in the Frazer valley. You will dock
in the center of the "town", well within walking distance from Stanley
Park, Gastown and skid row, take your pick.
You can take a bus from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria and will not
have to wait if like you can if you drive. Depends on the day and the time.

To many things to see and do here in Vancouver. Buy a lot of film and visit:
Stanley Park, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Grouse Mountain, Horseshoe Bay,
Granville Island, false creek.
That should give you a lifetime of memories.

Sorry for the cross posting, but I realized that this is more
appropriate
newsgroup for my post.-
We plan to stay in Vancouver for 2-3 days at the end of a 7 day Alaskan
cruise. What places and things to do in Vancouver during this period.
We
like nature, we don't mind some adventures. Thanks
AL
PS: Do you ABSOLUTELY recommend extending the 3 days to 5 for example?

Does anyone stop in Saskatchewan? Ya you ARE from Nanaimo ... and it shows.
Actually the lake country of northern Saskatchewan remains one of the
country's best kept secrets. Great fishing, what seems like endless lakes
.... Try a float plane drop out of LaRonge or Missinipe and spend a few days
alone on a large lake just fishing and camping. You won't believe that its
Saskatchewan. The sun don't only shine on Newcastle Island (although I
could return to the pub for pizza real soon)
Try something new - and see something other than the 'People's Republic of
BC'

Quote: Hi There,
Sorry for the cross-post, but I feel that this belongs in the group as
well.
I am a native British Columbian who has never really had the chance to
experience the rest of Canada and even most of this great province. I
would
really like to Backpack Canada, the same sort of way Canadians backpack
Australia, Europe et al. I think that it would be a great experience to
use
the hostel network and meet others who are doing the same thing.
I am looking for others who have done this, and stories/advice that they
might have. Does anyone have 'must see'
attractions? This includes both wilderness and urban items. I am planning
on doing this in Mid-September to late October, so weather will start to
become a concern. Are there any highly recommended hostels in each
province?
How late in the year do some of these hostels operate? Does anyone
acutally
stop in Saskatchewan? :)
Knowing how BIG Canada is, and how terrible Via Rail is, I think that I
will
probably take my car. This could be ok, because I meet up with others,
they
can ride along.
I live in Nanaimo, BC and know the Island really well, and I have done
some
of the better hikes on it! But I have never actually stayed in a hostel,
and
wouldn't mind meeting people who have. I wouldn't be against suggestions
regarding Vancouver Island as well.
Any stories, advice and/or ideas would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

Excellent, thanks! With the good weather we are looking forward to adding
more walks soon. I was in Okanagon wine country recently and so we have a
Kelowna waterfront walk ready to post soon. I thought the Kelowna waterfront
was quite stunning.
