Do topo maps of Venezuela's Tepuis exist at a useable scale, say,
1:25K? If yes, how good are they? Any recommendations?

We didn't find any before we trekked up Roraima. The best book for
Venezuela's backcounty appears to be the Bradt Guide, _Venezuela_, by
Hillary Dunsterville Branch. (The title can be hard to search for, it
might pop up under V for Venezuela, or B for Bradt Guide.) I think
the book is worth buying, but if you can find it in a bookstore (has
to be a good bookstore, the local Borders and Barnes and Noble did not
have it), you could browse through it and see what they say about
sources of maps.

I wonder if the movie "Up" will cause a cascade of visitors to Roraima
and Auyantepui? Even "The Lord of the Rings" caused a tourist influx
to New Zealand, and Middle Earth doesn't even exist. But Roraima and
Angel Falls do exist. (But not in the same place, as misleadingly
depicted in the movie.)

Very valuable info, many thanks! I think I am carrying my own pack no
matter what. Smile You were real troppers by taking the bus... I would
feel uncomfortable not blending in with the locals. I suppose we can
find an english-speaking guide.

We also flew some on domestic Venezuelan airlines. They seemed safe
enough, but were regularly four hours late. Finding a guide seemed to
be pretty easy, and IIRC we were able to leave the next day after
choosing him. The guide might need to take some time hiring porters,
but if you go without porters obviously that won't be an issue.

I was there this summer on an expensive tour; we took planes. The "flyby"
of Angel Falls was a non-starter ... utter peasoup.

I would feel uncomfortable and unsafe in any of the big cities. The
area around the parks seemed safe enough.

Remember that the waterfall on Mt. Kukenan, which you pass by
on the way to Roriama, is the second tallest free drop in the world,
though we saw lots less water there than at Angel Falls (seen
from the ground).

HOWEVER, one word to the wise: tinadazole. Google it, you likely
will need it.

Contact their embassy. This is why they exist. Other firms exist where
to consider looking.

We funded a Venezuelan PhD student at Stanford who now works at Google.
I'd personally bug him.
