So I'm not in the backcountry. Good. It is hellish in there, with
lots of things that can and will infect and/or eat/kill you.

Huh?

There are annoyances like mosquitos, noseeums, and ticks,
but the probability of getting killed by a critter in the
American backcountry is pretty low. I've been traveling
in the backcountry for decades and haven't even had a
near miss.

And what in the heck are people putting in their packs to
generate 60-lb loads, unless you're going on a four-week
trek without resupply or are doing a week of desert hiking
and are carrying all your water?

With modern gear, you prolly don't need even 15 pounds of
non-consumables if you're backpacking in benign conditions ...

Cheers, Wolf.

I m with you on this one Wolf,

Day Hikes, I can do with what is in my pockets, no need for even a
Rucksack..... Overnight, maybe a Rucksack, including the Emergency Kit.
Two - Three nights, well now were are talking Pack, maybe 40# on the
outside, depending on Terrain, Wx, and expected Wx..... Above the
Treeline, usually 60# with 40# left at Treeline, assuming a long Day for
a Summit Attempt, and assuming Snow and or Ice, above Treeline.
and I have seen folks hauling Suitcases on rollers, multiple miles, on
Trails heading into the Backcountry. It causes me to ROTGL......

I stopped checking out rec.backountry about four years ago. Looked back
this evening and I see two of the first four threads are from two of
the Giants: Len McDougall, Outdoor Outdoorsman, and Mike Vandeman.

Ahh, the memories.

It's kind of like driving past a traffic wreck. You just
have to look, now and again.
