Avoiding Twin Fares When for a Single When on a Tour?...

I sometimes travel as a single, and very often if it's a commercial
tour, they want fares for two for the best rates for each person. Single
rates seem to cost about 30-50% higher. Aside from bugging friends or
advertising, is there a way to reduce these costs?
