Hi Viatologists,
Science constantly evolves to define and describe a field of study.
With the advent of Internet and the average person's ability to share
geographic information, it was a matter of time before 'geotagging'
became a widespread phenomenon. After all, it allows readers to
locate landmarks w/ exact precision.
So let's enter viatology: the science of road-related studies. In
many aspects, viatology is a subset of geography.
Today, viatology borrows the concept of geotagging to pinpoint the
location of international roads. Whether you're studying roads for
leisure, in business as in repo collection or law enforcement, or in
education to cultivate the understanding of where things are,
viatology relies heavily upon geotagging by participating
viatologists.
In 2008, the Worldwide Transportation Library (WWTL) helped close that
loop. It was the first viatology resource to implement geotagging in
its international collection of roadside photographs. From that point
forward, the website officially referred to its geotagging as "Map
Location".
Until today... In the spirit of science and its evolution of
terminology, the WWTL has renamed its "Map Location" feature w/ a more
appropriate name: "Geotagged Location". You will find that 66% of
WWTL's photographs include geotagging support.
Here are some geotagged photographs, courtesy of the WWTL and its
