From the east ridge, Dante's View, there are some 14,000' peaks

Whitney's position behind the ridge is marked.
Split Mountain which is visible has been identified by some as
Whitney, which isn't visible.
I'm not quite sure about your assessment. In March of 2008 I was at
Dante's View with a group of people. Some who live in the Owens Valley
and known the Sierra peaks from the east side. It was a very clear day
(a storm had passed through earlier in the morning). I was able to spot
Mt. Whitney with my binoculars, and the people who I were with who are
quite familiar with the geography and topography of the region (many had
climbed Whitney and the other peaks of the Sierra) confirmed that it was
Whitney that I saw.
I see Dale's red X. Just not enough contrast or resolution. I need
a Blade Runner's camera. Nice zoom otherwise.
If possible, you look for Keeler and Day Needles to the left (South).
Tyndall has a couple of similar but not named buttresses.
Quote: I wasn't able to see Mt. Whitney from the actual Dante's Point, the
mountain in your photo was in the way. But Mt. Whitney came into view
just north of the Dante View parking lot. It was located near where you
have it on your panorama except it was just north of the near ridge
that's blocking Mt. Whitney in your photo.
Hmm, one might have to move some distance.
Quote: Next time I'm up in Death Valley, I'll try to take a photo of it with a
long telephoto lens if the weather cooperates.
I'll take a look on the next sampling field trip but w/o a long lense.
Quote: It definitely wasn't Split Mountain that I saw.
The way to clearly ID Split is the darker roof pendant rock over lighter
granite. It's got 2/3 different prominent gullies and ridges (all
climbed).
Generally on the Owens side from LP most tourists mistake Lone Pine Peak,
because it's closer. Most ignore Langley and Williamson. That says
nothing of other respectable 14K and 13K peaks and ridges.

I think he used the butt of a shot gun to open the guy up.
No brains in "Savage Innocence", you might consider watching it.

Oh?
Cute Blue. Very popular in AK. PB on the last of an ice floe, and
"Global Warming Sucks." That's quite amusing in Prudhoe Bay where a lot
of denyers are (image google "Prudhoe Bay National Forest") and
they sell the shirt from Deadhorse to Los Anchorage (cheaper by maybe $4-5).
I'll leave the price tag on and you can decide if you want to reimburse
or not.
Trust.

Hey we are all savages.
The problem is time. This week, all evenings are taken up. I'm just
waiting to head up to SF this evening.

Curious, since its not near major cities or national parks.
Near is a relative term. Whitney is in Sequoia NP.
My map indicates that Whitney Portal is maybe three miles from Mount
Whitney in a straight line. If I'm not mistaken, the summit is right
at the boundary of Sequoia National Park and Inyo National Forest.
I haven't been there, but I thought that you can actually see Mount
Whitney from Whitney Portal.
The check is the Star Trek Generations film. =A0There's a cut which starts
viewing the Whitney summit (w/o ID) which pans down to a house at
Whitney Portal and then cut inside the house the soon to be dead Capt. Kirk
is making an omelet when Piccard enters.
Added note:
Forgot, reminded by the new Warner documentary, another important check
is High Sierra with Bogart which ends at and slightly above the Portal.
The chase up to the Portal might have a Whitney glance. Needs checking.
Can't attend the Lone Pine Film Festival this year.
That might be another check.
