I will be travelling in the UK on a two year working holiday, and would
appreciate any advice anyone can give me. I already have one job lined
up, and am applying for others, but I'm not sure if that's the right way
to start.
How easy is it to get work in the UK?
What is the National Insurance number?
Is there work in December/January?
Am I mad?

You're not mad.
I assume you're getting a 'working holidaymaker' visa.
Work paying the national minimum wage of just over £5 an hour isn't too hard
to find in the large cities at any time.
Your NI number is what locks you into our taxation system. The system is
reasonably complicated but without a number you can't get tax relief on your
earnings for the first £80 or so a week and if you change jobs your tax
situation becomes very complicated.
When you start your first job you'll need to get your passport and visa and
first payslip and get an appointment at your local 'Jobcentre Plus' and fill
in the form and, eventually, you'll get a card with your number on it.
They won't give you a number without either a job or a number of letters
turning you down for a job because of a series of scandals in the past
couple of years.
These days you don't need an NI number to get free medical treatment.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea. |
