NASA Science News for December 29, 2003
Earth's magnetic north pole is racing away from North America. Compass
needles in Africa are drifting about 1 degree per decade. Globally the
magnetic field has weakened 10% since the 19th century. What's happening
to our planet's magnetic field? Researchers are seeking the answer. In
this story we see what they've learned in recent years.

Disagree. Portable electric razors emit a surprising amount of low frequency
EMF, having a pronounced degaussing effect on the Earth. Also, major oil
spills have lubricated the poles so they easily slide around. When the poles
flip we will see major extinctions of migrating birds overly dependent on
their magnetic sense, and thousands of Boy Scouts will watch their merit
badges, earned for ability to track with compass and topographic map, melt
and disintegrate.

The younger Boy Scouts in my patch navigate with hand held GPS units.
The older ones navigate by the stars, like Kylie Minogue or Madonna.

You might be right. I never had one of those things until,
one year, everybody seemed to give them away (I'd never pay money
for one). My fridge has acquired six in the last decade. However,
the magnetic field started to run away in the 19th century..it
could fridge magnets. There were ice boxes but they were made
of wood.

That doesn't follow from the magnetic field stuff.
Don't mean to say it's wrong of course.

But those magnets, by dint of design, had to be kept moving
around. Uncle's fridge magnets usually don't move. They
just keep hanging around in one place.

You are probably thinking of the magneto of the Model T Ford. If my memory[/quote:57035fb8cb]
serves me right, it formed part of the flywheel.
The telephone magnetoes of my youth had large external fields.
