i have a number of questions regarding the human brain, which i feel
are more appropiately posted in the biology groups, but since they
appear not to be functioning i thought i'd post them here:
1)which neurotransmitter is responsible for the following emotions
a)hunger b)anger 3)sexual pleasure
2)all of the above mentioned emotions originate in the limbic
system(?),since they all arise in the same area of the brain does that
mean they are also closely related evolutionary/physiologically? (i.e
the underlying neurological mechanisms for generating anger, aggression
etc are similar)?
3)Frued labelled these emotions as being part of the subconcious, the
Id.how do these 'subconcious' emotions become concious? i mean which
part of brain is the bridge between the limbic system and the cortex?
and the final killer question(!), is there a way of cutting this
bridge? either using the suregeons knife or pharmaceutically? have any
animal experiments been done on this, and what have been the effects
on the organism?
Thank you very much for reading my questions, i apologise if my
terminolgy has been unscientific, i have not studied past high
school, but am fairly interested in the human brain. |

No single neurotransmitter is involved

In terms of the limbic component, they are similar and are all related
to basic 4-F's (feeding, fighting, fleeing, and ...ing). There is one
basic neurological mechanism and that is the action potential.
The human brain is more complex tho than other animals and the
emotions you cite above involve more than *simply* limbic
responses--there is a strong cognitive or cortical component to them
as well.

Don't try to fit freudian theory into neuroanatomy--you are talking
about apples and oranges. Just because Freud labled something as
"unconscious" does not mean that the unconscious actually exists or
that there is a neuroanatomical correlate to it.
Neuroanatomicly, the thalamus is the major relay station between the
limbic system and other parts of the brain.

yes it's possible (surgically anyway). The effects are as
predicted--animals with no fight instinct, feeding etc.

Not bad for a high schooler. If you can put your hands on Carlson's
biopsychology text, you'd probably find it helpful.
====================================================
Ruby stepped toward him. "Edward," she said softly.
"Learn this from me. Holding anger is a poison. It
eats you from inside. We think that hating is a weapon
that attacks the person who harmed us. But hatred is
a curved blade. And the harm we do, we do to ourselves.
"Forgive, Edward, Forgive. Do you remember the
lightness you felt when you first arrived in heaven?...
No one is born with anger. And when we die, the soul
is freed of it. But now, here, in order to move on,
you must understand WHY you felt what you did, and WHY
you no longer need to feel it.
"Yo need to forgive your father."
Mitch Albom, "the five people you meet in heaven"
