Anyone know of any free or cheap software the will produce neat graphic logs
and/or sequence stratigraphical diagrams from raw data/spreadsheet?

TIA

Try surfer, or GMS.

Oops. Sorry. Neither of those are cheap, or free. Good luck finding one
that is.

Have a look at STRATCOL freeware. Columns are created with a
text file of space-delimited data. The program includes
default graphics for a number of rocks types.

To read about and/or download, go to:

Thanks for the suggestion but I couldn't get it to do anything other than
get into permanently looping error cycles (requiring the task manager to
exit). Documentation is minimal in the extreme and the user interface is
completely non intuitive - for example how do you input data? I may be
missing something but I think paper and pencil are quicker and easier than
Stratcol! (and at least you end up with something at the end).

Trouble is all the software I can find is at ridiculous prices for an
individual and do so many things that I don't require (and mostly don't so
what I actually want in a simple way).

I am not working professionally - just an amateur/part time student who
wants to tart up notes from field observations and measurements and to use
in assignments.

All I need is something where I can enter the thickness of beds, rocktype,
contact type, sedimentary structures, broad fossil types found and notes
(preferably via an Excel sheet or an Access database or similar) and let it
generate a lithological column and graphic log.

I may see if I can put together a symbol library for something like
SmartDraw so that you can just drag and drop the symbols and then stretch to
scale - but it shouldn't be too difficult to produce a simple program that
is suitable for student diagrams/personal use .... I am just surprised there
isn't one out there already.

Cheers

There was Applecore working on Mac ... They were supposed to make a PC
version ... But I didn't hear anything from the developper since years

The easiest way to enter your data is to copy the format
used in the example files that should have been downloaded
with the application. Look at the format in FRENCHMA.COL,
NOPAH.COL, or sheep SHEEP, open them with your browser or in
an ASCII text writer; I think you can save spread sheet
files in text format. They are simple text formats of strat
data in columns, plus other information, like the name of
the column. If you use the three letter lithology
designations that the After your data are entered in the
proper format, use a short (eight letter) abbreviation for
the file and give it a COL extension.

When you open STRATCOL, you open the file you created by
clicking on the third button from the left in the taskbar
and then browsing to find the file you saved. When you have
selected your file and clicked OK, STRATCOL should then
display the entries you made in your file with a depth
scale.

To change the way the column is displayed, go to
Options>Set. This box allows changes in units (meters/feet),
what is displayed, and how it looks.

You can change the abbreviations and even the lithologies
represented by the graphics. You have to enter the changes
under Options>Set Lithology Patterns.
..

Sorry about your struggle with STATCOL. Please keep in mind
it is freely provided. In my experience, there is a learning
curve with all freeware and most $$$ware as well.

I hope the above work with the learning curve, assuming you
are still trying.

it may after all not be a simple task if the result should meet professional
standards and be dependable too.

let's make one Carol!

put the below macro into a excel macro-module
(ask me if you don't know how)
select your column with thickness-data and
run setHøjde!
The skala is set (to 29) so that 1 appears as one cm on the screen
.............................................................................
........
Sub setHøjde()

Dim skala As Single
skala = 29
Dim ræk As Integer
Dim høj As Single
Dim res
Dim om As Range
Set om = Selection

For Each r In om.Rows

ræk = r.Row
høj = r.Value
Rows(ræk).RowHeight = høj * skala
Next

End Sub
..............................................................
This is one simple task that makes the excel sheet itself into a column
If you have a bmp-library with rocktypes, sedimentary structures or fossils,
it should not be that difficult to code it into place.

Cheers Carsten
