Heavy snow causes driving difficulties

ELKHART -- Heavy lake-effect snow that reduced visibilities to near zero led
to a pileup Friday on the toll road west of South Bend, involving several
semitrailers and cars and backing up traffic for hours.
Indiana State Police said several people were injured, but the injuries did
not appear to be life-threatening. Steel coils that one semitrailer was
carrying rolled off the back of the truck, police said.
White weather: Winter driving can be a real "white knuckle" experience as
many area drivers found out on Friday when a heavy snowfall hit Michiana.x
The accident happened about 11 a.m. along an eight-mile stretch of
snow-covered road. Several cars slid off the toll road or spun out because
of the slippery conditions, police said.
Lake-effect snow was expected to continue into the night in the South Bend,
Mishawaka and Elkhart areas. Accumulations were expected to range from three
to five inches in some places.
Area police agencies reported a lot of vehicle slide-offs and fender-benders
Friday, but no major crashes.
"We've had a number of accidents this morning -- nothing major," said Capt.
Lyndon Parrish of the Cass County Sheriff's Department.
Four people were hurt when a van slid off the road and overturned Friday
morning, southwest of Goshen.
The crash happened at 8:10 a.m. on S.R. 119, southwest of C.R. 38, according
to Elkhart County patrolmen Jeremy Stout and Tom Britton.
The driver, Delmar J. Birkey, 45, of 61015 C.R. 17, Goshen, suffered a leg
bruise. His passengers, Stacy Birkey, 35; Christina Theriot, 12; and Kevin
Theriot, 15, all also of the C.R. 17 address, reported pains as a result of
the crash, the officer reported.
In Elkhart, a city police car and a school bus tangled at Main and Marian
streets shortly after 3:15 p.m. No injuries were reported. School officials
dispatched another bus to pick up the students and continue their trip home.
The accident at Main and Marion was one of 11 in the city reported to police
between 3 and 4 p.m. Friday.
The Associated Press contributed to this story.
