UK BRR-ACED FOR SNOW & ICE MISERY Dec 21 2003

By Grant Hodgson

SNOW is expected to blanket large parts of the country today - but Scotland
is still the only place likely to get a White Christmas.

Aberdeen, at odds of 7-2, is the favourite to get snow on Christmas Day,
compared to odds of 5-1 for London, Manchester and Cardiff.

The Highways Agency, criticised after a cold snap caused travel chaos in the
South East last winter, is warning drivers to be prepared for extremely cold
weather today.

A spokesman said: "Eastern England will be affected particularly but we are
warning drivers that ice will make the roads treacherous."

Motorways and main roads to airports and ferry ports were yesterday clogged
with holidaymakers.

A record 1.8million Brits have fled the cold for a warmer Yuletide.

The present cold snap could last another 24 hours but by Christmas Day there
will be winds across the country with temperatures in the South rising close
to 10C.

Northern Scotland is set to be hit by blizzards today and snow showers are
also expected on the eastern coast of England, North Wales and on hills in
Cornwall and Devon.

However, there is some cheer for rail users, with strikes planned on the
Gatwick Express on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve will not go ahead.

WE are expected to spend £868 each on Christmas this year - £6 more than
last year, according to new figures.
