Snowstorm blasts Atlantic provinces
Last Updated Tue, 16 Dec 2003 11:25:26
ST.JOHN'S - A major snowstorm is pounding Newfoundland Tuesday after
dumping snow, ice and rain on the other Atlantic provinces.
Highways were covered with snow in many areas, with visibility
described as poor in several regions, including the Avalon Peninsula,
central and much of western Newfoundland.
High winds have disrupted ferry service between Port aux Basques and
North Sydney. Many schools are closed and police are warning people to
stay off the highways. There are some delays and disruptions to
flights moving in and out of St. John's Airport.
Parts of New Brunswick are reporting heavy snow, freezing rain and
high winds. About 50 centimetres of snow fell on Moncton and
Fredericton overnight. Combined with last week's storm, Moncton has
100 centimetres of snow on the ground.
More than 6,000 people in the province are without electricity and
many schools are closed.
Blizzard conditions are reported in western Prince Edward Island.
Police are warning people to stay off the roads because visibility is
so poor. High winds prevent tall vehicles from travelling on the
Confederation Bridge that links P.E.I. with New Brunswick.
Nova Scotia's southwestern coast felt the brunt of the storm Monday,
with heavy rain, snow and ice pellets. High winds forced the closure
of the MacKay Bridge between Halifax and Dartmouth.
High winds in the province Tuesday continued to knock out electricity
and force the closure of many schools.
Areas of eastern Quebec were also hit hard. About 50 centimetres of
snow fell Monday on Quebec City. Central Quebec and the townships have
reported about 70 centimetres.
The storm moved east through the region after hitting Ontario on
Sunday. |
