How much oregano oil would I have to take to experience a toxic
reaction? Even if I ingest it, is it generally safe? When I am sick I
often take oregano oil, but I'm not sure how safe it is.

The main chemicals in oregano oil are: carvacrol(a monoterpenoid
phenol which is largely responsible for oregano's extreme pungency),
thymol, p-cymene, cis-ocimene, caryophyllene and linalool. It probably
also contains some menthol, along with dozens of other naturally
occurring compounds. Oregano is a species of mint, so it would
probably be chemically similar to other mints. I've read that in some
animals, essential oils of oregano oil and mints can cause kidney
damage.

If you have questions about its toxicity, wouldn't it be prudent to check
*before* taking it?

I don't know, and I wouldn't risk it until I was sure.

I had an experience with cinnamon oil, which is about equal parts
eugenol and cinnamaldehyde. Cinnamaldehyde is phenylacrolein, and has
acrolein-like properties. After putting a tiny drop on my tongue with
a toothpick, a painful swelling blew up and stayed inflamed for over
two weeks and healed grudgingly.

I don't do those experiments any more.

Carvacrol is a physiological highly active substance and hence should
be used like any medicine with caution. However, I had a look at the
Toxnet database and didn't any study relating oregano oil or carvacrol
to kidney damage. In contrary, there are indications that carvacrol
has an hepatoprotective and hypolipidemic effect (at least on D-
galactosamine-induced hepatotoxic rats). (http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/
