<< This is the same man who proposed the ridiculous waiver of the gas
tax
during the summer months. >>
This is also the same man who has the most dismal voting record of any
senator from Arizona. I can't begin to count the times he hasn't voted
in the senate on issues important to Arizona and the nation. It's even
worse since he has been running all over touting himself for the
presidency. He has infuriated a lot of folks in Arizona if letters to
the editor are any measure. He doesn't tend to business for the people
of the state who elected him, and I doubt he would tend to business if
the people of the nation elected him president, and that is truly
frightening. We need a business man as president, not some guy married
to a beer heiress. Ross Perot, where are you? Sigh.

(( She ended up writing
him off, and I think a lot of people did, and that's why he ended
up ))
That could be part of it, Gisele. I also read he withdrew because of
threats against his family. These were unproven, but that doesn't
mean they didn't happen.
He was my boss for years, and I never thought of him as flaky.
Determined in his opinions, yes. Rigid when it came to our following
his company's rules, yes. Loyal to his employees, definitely yes. To
get a better feeling of this man who is a hero of mine, just read Ken
Follett's novel "On Wings of Eagles."
I was working in San Francisco's EDS office both before and when the
actions in the book happened. I can remember seeing letters translated
from the original Farsi posted on the bulletin board from people we
knew who were working in Iran. Our managers even brought in TV during
the time of the tension there.
When the movie was made of that book, I cracked up at first when
Richard Crenna was cast as the rather short Ross Perot. Then I
realized Ross might be short in height, but he was a giant to most of
his faithful employees.

Could never understand why politicians can't run the country like the big
business it is. If we spent our household finances like they spend taxpayer
dollars, we'd all be bankrupt.

I often wonder what our country would be like if he had continued in
his run for the Presidency, though I do understand his reasons for
dropping out.
I bet a nickel that our budget would be balanced, and oil companies
wouldn't have us over a barrel, so to speak, even if he is a Texan
like the current President.

I used to think the same until I got a book of old Molly Ivins columns
from when Perot was running. She was a Texan as well, and she liked him
a lot when he first ran, but she ended up concluding he was too flaky,
too full of conspiracy theories and refusing to talk to those who did
not agree with him to be able to run the country. She ended up writing
him off, and I think a lot of people did, and that's why he ended up
pulling out of the race.

If you subscribe to certain economic theories, the government's budget
works in part like a shock absorber to the free market to keep it
relatively balanced. |

I guess I must have missed that as the government's job when reading the
Constitution. No wonder big government costs us an arm and a leg.

I hope you will grant that a few things have changed since the
Constitution was written. I guess when the country when into the
Depression of the 1930s, FDR should have just left all those people to
starve on the streets because the Constitution did not address the
matter.

Well, I think that any rational person would have to agree that the
government has spread far further than the Constitution originally
stated. Some people will agree, and others won't. |
