NanoApex Corp. Announces Two New Versions of Nanocompany Database
NanoInvestorNews (http://www.nanoinvestornews.com), the investment
portal hosted by NanoApex Corp. (http://www.nanoapex.com) [profile],
today announced the release of two downloadable versions of the
popular NanoInvestorNews Nanocompany Database (NCD). The database is
the largest global publicly accessible database of MEMS and nanotech
companies; There are currently 643 distinct listings from all over the
world with daily updates. All listings are moderated to ensure that
only nanocompanies and not companies abusing the nano- prefix are
included.

Science or fantasy, cryonics could be very Boca
Last week, the Boca Raton Planning & Zoning Board recommended against
the application of Suspended Animation Inc. to build a laboratory. The
19-month-old cryonics company seeks to be a cutting-edge player in the
age-old dream of preserving and reviving the dead.

Israeli-French biotech, nanotech conference at Ben Gurion University,
Israel
Nov. 30 - The second Israeli-French conference on biotechnology and
nano-technology will open tomorrow at Ben Gurion University of the
Negev [profile], Globes reported. The first conference took place in
Grenoble, France. 100 overseas guests are due to participate in the
conference, which will deal with a variety of biotechnology and
nano-technology applications. These include micro-biosensors, which
are likely to be useful in the struggle against bio-terrorism, and
biochip proteins, which are likely to facilitate simultaneous
diagnosis of multiple diseases. Discussions will focus on the use of
these applications in daily life. Prof. Robert Marks from the
biotechnology engineering department at Ben Gurion University and Dr.
Serge Cosnier of the Laboratory of Organic Electrochemistry at Joseph
Fourier University, Grenoble will chair the discussions.

Molecular memories tough it out
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, US [profile],
and North Carolina State University, US [profile], claim to have
shown, for the first time, that an organic molecule can compete with
semiconductors in terms of stability. The finding could have
implications for the development of hybrid molecular-semiconductor
devices.

Enzymes etch out surfaces
Researchers at the Ben-Gurion University [profile] of the Negev in
Israel have used an enzyme to etch out depressions in a protein
surface. The team says this is the first example of enzyme-based
negative nanolithography - lithography where material is removed
rather than added.

Big breakthroughs in tiny technology
Researchers at the University of Kentucky [profile] have found a way
to fashion an exotic form of carbon into specialized membranes that
could lead to new drug delivery systems for medical patients, highly
efficient filters or improved fuel cells to power automobiles. The
team so far has produced only small sample membranes about 1 inch
square. But scaling up to commercial sizes should not present
insurmountable problems, said Bruce J. Hinds, a chemist with UK's
Department of Chemicals and Materials Engineering, who led the
research.

How safe is nanotechnology?
Although nanotechnology is said to have the potential to drastically
alter 21st-century society, there must be a thorough assessment of the
risks nanomaterials could pose to human health and the ecosystem. In
October, expectations surged in the academic world that the Nobel
Prize in Chemistry might be awarded to a Japanese researcher for the
fourth consecutive year.

Nanotech Instruments Allow First Direct Observations Of RNA
'Proofreading'
In a new study in the journal Nature, Block and his colleagues present
strong evidence to support this proofreading hypothesis. Their results
- based on actual observations of individual molecules of RNAP - are
posted on Nature's website. In another set of experiments published in
the Nov. 14 issue of Cell magazine, the researchers discovered that
RNAP makes thousands of brief pauses as it pries open and copies the
DNA double helix. Editor's Note: Research done at Stanford [profile].

SARS Viruses Don't Stand a Chance Against the New Nano-Coating Nanozid
Marburg, Saarbrcken and Halberstadt, Germany, 17 Nov. 2003. Only last
spring the SARS epidemic sent a shiver of fear around the globe. Now
scientists working at the Institute of Virology at the University
Hospital of Philipps University Marburg discovered that the viruses
responsible for the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) lose
their terror on surfaces coated with special nanoparticles. Editor's

Passage of bill gives CU nanotech research a lift
Nanotechnology research, of which Cornell University is a field
leader, received a boost last week when both houses of Congress passed
a bill that would promote its development in coming years. Sen.
Hillary Clinton's press office confirmed the 21st Century
Nanotechnology Research and Development Act's passage in the House and
Senate and its pending approval by President Bush.

Volkswagen in trial cooperation with Israeli nano start-up
Nov. 26 - German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen has begun a trial
joint cooperation with Israeli start-up Nano Materials [profile],
which develops future materials for use in engines, gears and
transmission systems, Globes reported. In particular, the materials
would be used as lubricants so that oil would not need changing, and
other parts would not need replacing so often, thereby making the
vehicles of the future longer-lasting than those of today. Nano
Materials was set up only one-and-a-half years ago, based on the
scientific development of Prof. Reshef Tenne, of the Weizmann
Institute's Nanomaterials Synthesis Group [profile]. Tenne had
developed dry lubrication material based on nanostructures, which
cling to the mechanical parts of the automobile. Tenne's breakthrough
enabled reducing the friction in systems to their minimal, while
offering exciting possibilities in the fields of space and avionics as
well.

Nanotechnology Gets $3.7 Billion Federal Backing; Chicago at Epicenter
Nov. 27--In what some call the biggest commitment to technology
research in 40 years, President Bush is expected next week to sign a
law establishing a federal office for nanotechnology. "This is a fair
equivalent to the earliest days when NASA was created," said F. Mark
Modzelewski, executive director of the NanoBusiness Alliance, a trade
group.
