What brand of portable GPS (such as the Garmin eTrex series) would
provide me with detailed street level information, including street
names and POIs, in Japan ? I will be traveling mainly in Tokyo.

Thank you,
Max

Thanks, but this software is not complete, from what I understand.

http://www.uud.info/en/ says:
"List of Limitations: [...] there is no street names on the map
[...]" (except for "[...] major highways and national roads [...]").

I am looking for a complete map.

Regards,
Max

Thanks Burnie,

It would be nice for Garmin to offer an English language guide, even
if street names should be in Japanese (or English and Japanese). After
all, I bet international visitors really need directions in Japan! ;)

However, does anyone know of any other company offering a handheld GPS
that could run Japan maps ?

Cheers,
Max

The only complete mapping is Garmins City Navigator Japan which uses
the Japanese alphabet

I purchased this last year prior to my trip to Tokyo and Kyoto. Even

with only highways and major streets labeled, I found it quite useful
for finding my way. Note: I did not have a car, relied on walking and
public transport. Even with the auto-routing, I don't know if I would
want to use it for driving in Tokyo since it doesn't know all of the one
way restrictions.

I used Google Maps and Google Earth in combination with a couple of
really good paper maps to create waypoints in the GPS. The streets were
very accurately located, and I used the GPS often and reliably to
navigate to the waypoints. The hardest part was learning the weird
Japanese addressing. Once I got the hang of it, the GPS got me to the
right block every time, and often to the right building when it's
location was known to Google or on the paper map.
