Hello,
I bought the XT 12" orion intelliscope especially for deepsky
observations and now and than planetary observs.
Now i will buy some eyepieces for this dobson which is an F4.9 1500mm.
Can somebody give me some advise what i should buy, 2" eyepieces or
1/4 eyepieces!
I want very good quality! i did a little research and think about the
baader Hyperions, are they really good for deepsky?
Or the panoptic, nagler, or TMB paragon!
Thanks very much to help me out, maybe some of you observers have the
same size of dobson so they can give me some opinion about their
eyepieces they use.

Hi
Mount size isn't about quality, it is about the size of the
field stop. A plossl 12mm eyepiece is no better in a
2 inch then a 1.25. Manufactures don't make quality
.93s but that isn't because of the size, just a manufacture
choice.
Wide field at low power will require a 2 inch mount to avoid
venetting(sp?). Most deep space objects will be best viewed
at 50x to 100x. Planet viewing is on the order of 150x to 300x.
Do note that a Dobson mount is hard to track at 300x and
is best with a clocked motor drive.

I have an XT12 with several eyepieces -- too many, in fact.
If you are interested in deep-sky observations, you need the best low-
magnification, broad-field eyepiece you can get. Start with it to
starhop to the vicinity of your target then creep up in magnification
to see the object you're looking for.
The eyepieces that I use the most are:
TeleVue PanOptic 35mm, 2-inch (about the size of a brick and the cost
of another scope) -- magnification with the XT12 is 43X, excellent for
broad field views. I almost always start my searches with this one.
TeleVue Radian 18mm, 1.25-inch -- 83X mag; for smaller deep-sky
objects (Ring Nebula for example) this one gives splendid views
Nagler 7mm, 1.25-inch -- 214X mag; I use this one a lot for planetary
viewing
Nagler 5mm, 1.25-inch -- 300X mag; planetary eyepiece, very detailed
views when seeing conditions are excellent, otherwise, a bit too much
mag.
Also, the 25mm and 10mm eyepieces that came with the scope fill gaps
in the four listed above and are good general purpose eyepieces.
Of course, you could always get a good 2X Barlow, thereby doubling
your number of eyepieces -- 25mm with the Barlow becomes 12.5mm; 10mm
with the Barlow becomes 5mm. I recommend you obtain, in this order:
1st purchase. 2x Barlow. The TeleVue Barlow is excellent.
2nd purchase. An eyepiece in the 25 - 35mm range for broad views and
starhopping -- the TeleVue PanOptic 35mm is a great performer.
3rd purchase. Something between 10 and 5mm -- the 7mm Nagler would be
a good choice. |

The Intelliscope comes with 25 mm and 10 mm Ploessl eyepieces. My
next eyepiece purchase would be a 2" diameter extra wide field
eyepiece with a focal length in the range 25 mm to 35 mm. Which
eyepiece depends on your preferences and budget. If you wear
eyeglasses you want to get eyepieces with long eye relief. For high
powers I would use a 2x barlow lens with the eyepieces that came with
the telescope.
