Before my retirement, I was a consultant to the ophthalmic and medical
laser industries for over 30 years. Since retiring in December 2005, I
have put a lot of my published writings online in my Web Journal.
Just before retiring, I became interested in a new drug treatment for
age-related macular degeneration. It was called Avastin, and its use
stopped the wet form of AMD cold in its tracks for most patients
treated, and actually improved vision for many. Since my first posting
about this miracle drug in December 2005, I have now posted some 22
updates, as well as postings about a comparison trial, the CATT study
(Comparison of AMD Treatment Trials), sponsored by the National
Institute of Health (NIH) between Avastin (at about $50 a treatment
dose) and Lucentis, the FDA approved sister treatment (at $2000 a
treatment dose).
I have also posted information about some other new treatments for
AMD, including about a retina regeneration therapy and the use of
Strontium 90 in combination with Lucentis to reduce the frequency of
Lucentis injections.
I guess what I am saying, if you or someone you know has AMD or
symptoms of AMD, you might want to tell them about my blog for gaining
some useful information about new treatments for this dreadful
disease.
