Its more down to strain than breed. That means it depends on what the
breeder has been doing for the past 5 generations and more.
You can get Plymouth Rocks who have been bred for eggs, those who have been
bred for meat, those who have been bred for exhibition and lost both
productive qualities and those who have some productivity in both traits,
and those who have not been selected at all so its completely pot luck.
The best is to find out what other folks are doing around you. Even better
is to find someone who is breeding for productivity in your surrounding area
or within driving distance.
North can also mean mild wet and windy, like us, with the Gulf Stream or
cold and dry. Each local climate requires different qualities.
For us its imperative that the birds have strong hard feathering to survive,
even in breeds which are normally quite soft feathered.
Different continents have different breeds available.
