I have a CD with Macsyma 2.40 and PDEase2D. It runs under Windows XP but
not Vista, where I get an error message that the server was terminated. Is
there a workaround? Thanks |

Best and simplest solution: don't use Vista, it is a bloated, DRM
protection encumbered and buggy OS in beta stage. Instead, keep
Windows XP (or move to other horizons, such as Linux + VMware+WinXP).

It seems pretty clear that Frank has to run Vista, so probably this is
not a best and simplest solution for Frank.
It is useful warning for other people, though.
One possibility may be to use Maxima, which, for many purposes is
quite similar, can run under Vista, I think,
and happens to be free.
PDEase2D, if this is really the important part for Frank, is not in
Maxima though.

First I don't see where you find "pretty clear" that Frank has to
run Vista. Many people get Vista not because they choose it,
but because they were forced to buy a new computer preloaded with it.
What happens often is that they find the new computer slower than
the old one and complain to the vendor. The fix is often to
replace Vista with Windows XP. This is why Microsoft had to delay
again stopping selling Windows XP.
The second point is that Frank pretty clearly wants to run Macsyma
and PDEase2D, not Maxima. Thus the simplest path is to use compatible
OSes: Windows 98/2000/XP. These OSes can run either natively, or
virtualy within other OSes like Linux or OS/X. Currently, VMware is
probably the most recommandable virtualisation tool, even if
other exist that are free.
With luck or more expertise one could think running Macsyma and
PDEase2D with Wine on Linux. I don't know anybody having done that,
just that Word/Excel/Powerpoint can be used very well in this way.

I have computers running XP, Vista and SuseLinux. I'd rather not have two
computers running different windows operating systems.
Perhaps VMWare is the best solution.

I could not agree more. Symoblic maths packages can need a lot of
resources and so having a bloated operating system which needs lots or
RAM and CPU power for itself is not too useful.
There's an interesting article at
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,139911-c,xp/article.html
about the relative speed of XP with a beta of service pack 3 and Vista
with a beta of service pack 1. There appears to be a small boost in XP's
performance with beta service pack, which I admit is a bit surprising.
<quote>
According to the Office performance benchmarks, Windows XP SP3 is also
considerably faster than Vista SP1. "None of this bodes well for Vista,
which is now more than two times slower than the most current builds of
its older sibling," said Barth.
</quote>
I recently installed Solaris x86 on my fairly new (< 6 months old) and
high end (around $3200 USD) laptop. It is so much more usable now Vista
is removed. I also got Mathematica 6 running on it, despite the fact
Mathematica 6 is not supported on Solaris x86 with an Intel CPU (only on
AMD CPUs).
I note Sony have now made available XP drivers for my laptop, despite
the fact it is sold only with Vista. Clearly there are a sufficient
number of people wanting to rid the machine of Vista for Sony to decide
to support XP on a machine which ships only with Vista. |

I have a version of Macsyma 2.1 for Windows 95/98, an old install
disk of Windows 98, that I just installed on a laptop Intel Core Duo 2
running Mandriva 2008 Linux and VMware Workstation 6.02, with a 30 days
evaluation license. The whole thing needs an amazing modest file, in
todays standard, of less than 300MB. Macsyma 2.1 itself requires about
1/10 of that. Macsyma works as expected.

I tried to install it on Windows XP, but I was not successfull. It is
running on Windows 98. Can you tell me the trick that it will be running
on Windows XP?

I'm running 2.3 under XP. The only "trick" is to log on an administrator
account when you do the install. I can't remember whether you need to
enter your passwords for each account that will use it or just once as
the admin.

Thank you, I was now encouraged to tried it once more and I had no
problems any more was Macsyma 2.4 and PDEase2D.
But for the future Iwould be very interested if someone could solve the
problem for Windows Vista.

Or better still, ask support@microsoft.com - or whatever method M$ use.
Let them know they have broken binary compatibility. |

Last year, I tried to run Macsyma 2.4 under Vista on my friends laptop computer. It loaded and ran just fine, however Macsyma help did not work because it depends on Windows help which is not part of Vista. I downloaded Windows help from Microsoft web site. Then Macsyma help worked but Macsyma engine gave error message. I sent message to Symbolics and they said that Macsyma should work under Vista but they never tried it.
Recently I bought my own laptop with Vista+Service Pack 1. It loads Macsyma just fine but I get error message for Macsyma engine when it tries to run. I then tried compatiblility modes. Just right click on Macsyma executables, select properties, select compatibility, then select Windows 98 or Windows 95, and then apply and OK. Unfortunately even this does not work.
If Symbolics can not fix this I might get an Apple laptop and partition it to run both Leopard and Windows 98.
