Top Reasons NOT To Be Vegetarian
Over the 14 years that I have been lecturing,
writing columns, and attending health conferences,
I've been witness to ten major myths promoted
by various anti-vegan groups such as the dairy
industry, meat industry, Weston Price Lost-and-
Foundation, and www.mercola.idiot.
THE TEN MYTHS
1) Meat eaters have lower rates of heart disease
than do vegetarians.
2) Meat eating men make for better lovers because
they have higher rates of the male sex hormone.
3) Meat eaters have lower rates of all of the
major diseases than do vegetarians.
4) Vegetarians have higher mortality rates than
meat eaters.
5) A vegetarian diet is not appropriate for a
pregnant woman or nursing mother.
6) Children born to vegetarians are smaller
than children born to meat eaters.
7) Meat eaters obtain more vitamins and nutrients
than vegetarians, because the animals they eat also
consume vegetables.
8) It is a proven fact that vegetarians have higher
rates of heart disease than meat eaters.
9) Meat eaters have lower rates of diabetes than
do vegetarians.
10) Meat eaters have lower rates of breast cancer than
do vegetarians.
_____________________________________
ONE BY ONE, LET'S DISPEL THOSE MYTHS
_____________________________________
1) Meat eaters have lower rates of heart disease
than do vegetarians.
"Significant atherosclerosis is rare in peoples
whose diet over the life span is predominantly
vegetarian and low in calories, total lipids,
saturated lipids and cholesterol."
Nutrition and Athersclerosis by Louis Katz. 1958
______________________________________
2) Meat eating men make for better lovers because
they have higher rates of the male sex hormone.
"The study measured testosterone levels in 696
Oxford University men. Of the study participants,
233 were vegan (ate no animal products) and 237
were vegetarian (ate milk and dairy products).
The remaining 237 subjects were men who ate meat
on most days of the week...vegans had higher
testosterone levels than vegetarians and meat
eaters."
British Journal of Cancer, 83(1), July 2000
______________________________________
3) Meat eaters have lower rates of all of
mankind's major diseases than do vegetarians.
"Scientific data suggest positive relationships
between a vegetarian diet and reduced risk for
several chronic degenerative diseases and conditions,
including obesity, coronary artery disease,
hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and some
types of cancer."
Journal of American Dietetic Association, 11/97, 97(1)
______________________________________
4) Vegetarians have higher mortality rates than
meat eaters.
"Vegetarians often have lower mortality rates
from several chronic degenerative diseases than
do non vegetarians."
British Medical Journal, 1996; 313
______________________________________
5) A vegetarian diet is not appropriate for a
pregnant woman or nursing mother.
"Vegan diets are appropriate for all stages of the
life cycle, including during pregnancy and lactation."
Am J Clin Nutr. 1994;59(suppl):1176S-1181S.
______________________________________
6) Children born to vegetarians are smaller
than children born to meat eaters.
"Vegan diets can meet the nutrient and energy needs
of pregnant women. Birth weights of infants born
to well nourished vegetarian women have been shown
to be similar to birth-weight norms and to birth
weights of infants of non vegetarians."
Pediatrics. 1989;84
______________________________________
7) Meat eaters obtain more vitamins and nutrients
than vegetarians, because the animals they eat also
consume vegetables.
"Vegetarian diets offer disease protection benefits
because higher concentration of antioxidants such
as vitamins C and E, carotenoids, and phytochemicals."
Am J Clin Nutr. 1996;63(suppl)
______________________________________
8) It is a proven fact that vegetarians have higher
rates of heart disease than meat eaters.
"Mortality from coronary artery disease is lower in
vegetarians than in non vegetarians."
British Medical Journal, 1994; 308
______________________________________
9) Meat eaters have lower rates of diabetes than
do vegetarians.
"Type 2 diabetes mellitus is less likely to be a
cause of death in vegetarians than non vegetarians."
Am J Clin Nutr. 1988;48(suppl)
______________________________________
10) Meat eaters have lower rates of breast cancer than
do vegetarians.
"Breast cancer rates are lower in populations that
consume plant based diets."
American Cancer Society Cancer Facts and Figures, 1994
______________________________________
Real science overwhelmingly supports the conclusion
that a plant-based diet make for healthier people.

I believe there is less chance of suffering the cumulative effect from
small doses of numerous and varied poisons sprayed, dusted, or now bred
into vegetable crops if you eat meat that is grass raised but not feed
lot fed. Or raise your own food, if you can still find seeds. The Agri
Business is pattening and breding and won't let you use seed from your
crop but you have to buy new seed from them. Some of their plant's seeds
are bred not to reproduce. Franken food is all that will be available,
in the near future, on grocers' shelves. Natural poisons bred into them
are still poisons. If a little bit will kill the bugs a lot of little
bits will kill us.
They say ah, a little bit of poison, preservative, carbon monoxide,
phosphates, etc, or "all natural" flavor enhancements won't harm you but
they will enhance their shelf life and their bottom line. A little
poison here, a little poison there....it all adds up. By the time you
die from the cancer or whatever there is no way to back trace which or
who's poisons ultimately killed you. |

You can still get open pollinated organic seeds from Seeds of Change.
There will always be a demand for heirloom variates, but if you want to
be sure, learn to save your own seeds.

Me thinks the entire food chain is polluted whether vegie or meat products.
I must say, vegies from ones own garden (no chems) do taste a lot better
even though they do not seem to last as long in the fridge. Scary.

For once, and should not be taken as a new trend, I agree with you. I
would also agree with the "little poison" theory, but the problem is
that most of today's poisons are not natural ones, and they tend to
accumulate in our bodies.
As for not lasting as long in the fridge, or outside, I am glad you
noticed that. What you found is actually one of the best tests I can
think of about food products: the longest they last, the worse they
are for us. I am talking about comparisons made for different brands
of the same product. A co-worker, many years ago when studying in
Alberta, found that a hamburger and fries from some major fast food
chain, lasted in his fridge for six months, without any signs of
decomposing. Some cheap industrial wines can last for weeks after
open.

It's unlikely that you would plant the same varieties of vegetables
that commercial growers do so yours won't be bred to maximize the
period of time when they look good enough to eat.

has been to be servants
and subjects, are free children.
672. A formal point.--When Saint Peter and the Apostles deliberated about
abolishing circumcision, where it was a question of acting against the law
of God, they did not heed the prophets, but simply the reception of the Holy
Spirit in the persons uncircumcised.
They thought it more certain that God approved of those whom He filled with
His Spirit than it was that the law must be obeyed. They knew that the end
of the law was only the Holy Spirit; and that thus, as men certainly had
this without circumcision, it was not necessary.
673. Fac secundum exemplar quod tibi ostensum est in monte.126--The Jewish
religion then has been formed on its likeness to the truth of the Messiah;
and the truth of the Messiah has been recognised by the religion, which was
the type of it.
Among the Jews the truth was only typified; in heaven it is revealed.
In the Church it is hidden and recognised by its resemblance to the type.
The type has been made according to the truth, and the truth has been
recognised according to the type.
Saint Paul says himself that people will forbid to marry, and he himself
speaks of it to the Corinthians in a way which is a snare. For if a prophet
had said the one, and Saint Paul had then said the other, he would have been
accused.
674. Typical.--"Do all things according to the pattern which has been shown
thee on the mount." On which Saint Paul says that the Jews have shadowed
forth heavenly things.
675.... And yet this Covenant, made to blind some and enlighten others,
indicated in those very persons, whom it blinded, the truth which should be
recognised by others. For the visible blessings which they received from God
were so great and so divine that He indeed appeared able to give them those
that are invisible and a Messiah.

exercises of grace; i.e. of love to God, repentance, and holiness. And
if they be more particularly examined, they appear plainly to have an
inward firm persuasion of the reality of divine things, such as they did
not use to have before their conversion. And those who have the most
clear discoveries of divine truth in the manner that has been mentioned,
cannot have this always in view. When the sense and relish of the divine
excellency of these things fades, on a withdrawment of the Spirit of
God, they have not the medium of the conviction of their truth at
command. In a dull frame, they cannot recall the idea and inward sense
they had, perfectly to mind; things appear very dim to what they did
before. And though there still remains an habitual strong persuasion;
yet not so as to exclude temptations to unbelief, and all possibility of
doubting. But then, at particular times, by God's help, the same sense
of things revives again, like fire that lay hid in ashes. I suppose the
grounds of such a conviction of the truth of divine things to be just
and rational; but yet, in some, God makes use of their own reason much
more sensibly than in others. Oftentimes persons have (so far as could
be judged) received the first saving conviction from reasoning which
they have heard from the pulpit; and often in the course of reasoning
they are led into in their own meditations.
The arguments are the same that they have heard hundreds of times; but
the force of the arguments, and their conviction by them, is altogether
new; they come with a new and before unexperienced power. Before, they
heard it was so, and they allowed it to be so; but now they see it to be
so indeed. Things now look exceeding plain to them, and they wonder they
did not see them before.
They are so greatly taken w |

false beauties which we blame in Cicero have their admirers, and
in great number.
32. There is a certain standard of grace and beauty which consists in a
certain relation between our nature, such as it is, weak or strong, and the
thing which pleases us.
Whatever is formed according to this standard pleases us, be it house, song,
discourse, verse, prose, woman, birds, rivers, trees, rooms, dress, etc.
Whatever is not made according to this standard displeases those who have
good taste.
And as there is a perfect relation between a song and a house which are made
after a good model, because they are like this good model, though each after
its kind; even so there is a perfect relation between things made after a
bad model. Not that the bad model is unique, for there are many; but each
bad sonnet, for example, on whatever false model it is formed, is just like
a woman dressed after that model.
Nothing makes us understand better the ridiculousness of a false sonnet than
to consider nature and the standard and, then, to imagine a woman or a house
made according to that standard.
33. Poetical beauty.--As we speak of poetical beauty, so ought we to speak
of mathematical beauty and medical beauty. But we do not do so; and the
reason is that we know well what is the object of mathematics, and that it
consists in proofs, and what is the object of medicine, and that it consists
in healing. But we do not know in what grace consists, which is the object
of poetry. We do not know the natural model which we ought to imitate; and
through lack of this knowledge, we have coined fantastic terms, "The golden
age," "The wonder of our times," "Fatal," etc., and call this jargon
poetical beauty.
But whoever imagines a woman after this model, which consists in saying
little things in big words, will see a pretty girl ad |

that you
are held over in the hand of that God, whose wrath is provoked and
incensed as much against you, as against many of the damned in hell. You
hang by a slender thread, with the flames of divine wrath flashing about
it, and ready every moment to singe it, and burn it asunder; and you
have no interest in any Mediator, and nothing to lay hold of to save
yourself, nothing to keep off the flames of wrath, nothing of your own,
nothing that you ever have done, nothing that you can do, to induce God
to spare you one moment. -- And consider here more particularly,
Whose wrath it is: it is the wrath of the infinite God. If it were only
the wrath of man, though it were of the most potent prince, it would be
comparatively little to be regarded. The wrath of kings is very much
dreaded, especially of absolute monarchs, who have the possessions and
lives of their subjects wholly in their power, to be disposed of at
their mere will. Prov. 20:2. "The fear of a king is as the roaring of a
lion: Whoso provoketh him to anger, sinneth against his own soul." The
subject that very much enrages an arbitrary prince, is liable to suffer
the most extreme torments that human art can invent, or human power can
inflict. But the greatest earthly potentates in their greatest majesty
and strength, and when clothed in their greatest terrors, are but
feeble, despicable worms of the dust, in |

He should
separate from all other nations, whom He should deliver from their enemies
and should put into a place of rest, has promised to do so and has foretold
by His prophets the time and the manner of His coming. And yet, to confirm
the hope of His elect, He has made them see in it an image through all time,
without leaving them devoid of assurances of His power and of His will to
save them. For, at the creation of man, Adam was the witness, and guardian
of the promise of a Saviour, who should be born of woman, when men were
still so near the creation that they could not have forgotten their creation
and their fall. When those who had seen Adam were no longer in the world,
God sent Noah whom He saved, and drowned the whole earth by a miracle which
sufficiently indicated the power which He had to save the world, and the
will which He had to do so, and to raise up from the seed of woman Him whom
He had promised. This miracle was enough to confirm the hope of men.

the time of their leisure to supply them with delights and games, so that
there is no blank in it. In fact, kings are surrounded with persons who are
wonderfully attentive in taking care that the king be not alone and in a
state to think of himself, knowing well that he will be miserable, king
though he be, if he meditate on self.
In all this I am not talking of Christian kings as Christians, but only as
kings.
143. Diversion.--Men are entrusted from infancy with the care of their
honour, their property, their friends, and even with the property and the
honour of their friends. They are overwhelmed with business, with the study
of languages, and with physical exercise; and they are made to understand
that they cannot be happy unless their health, their honour, their fortune
and that of their friends be in good condition, and that a single thing
wanting will make them unhappy. Thus they are given cares and business which
make them bustle about from break of day. It is, you will exclaim, a strange
way to make them happy! What more could be done to make them
miserable?--Indeed! what could be done? We should only have to relieve them
from all these cares; for then they would se |
