It looks like purely manufactured lifeforms are close.

The article mentions some of the same concerns that apply to nanotechnology:
"bio hackers" working in garages ...
"Where's the governance and oversight?"

Is this line of research going to usurp some of the potential of nanotech, or
could designed wetware help to bootstrap a dryware/mechanical nanofactory?
