Hi everyone,

I went to see this film this weekend and really enjoyed it.

I did however come across one thing.

Just after they finish talking to Jim Lovell about the Apollo 13 mission,
they pan to a screen that says that Apollo 13 was followed by 5 more
missions to the moon. Surely that should have been 4? unless they were
thinking of Apollo Flights and were thinking of ASTP? has anyone else
noticed it?

Cheers

Andy

Either they were counting Eugene Shoemaker or they weren't counting at
all.

:)

I guess they meant Apollo Missions as Mr Shoemaker went, well his ashes did,
aboard Lunar Prospector to the moon and eventually crashed into the moon

Thanks

Andy

I think you've probably got it. Someone heard there were 5 more Apollo
missions (counting ASTP) and assumed they all were lunar missions. Or
else just a misprint. Either way, in writing or editing, it was
sloppy.

Just what was the EXACT phrasing? Did they say "Apollo Missions to the
moon", "American missions" or "manned missions"? It's possible they
may have counted an unmanned mission, such as Clementine.

So what's the difference, as you folks would believe in anything
having the NASA/Apollo stamp of approval on it, especially if it's in
LeapFrog popup eye-candy format.

Well, there was a "made for TV" movie about "Apollo 18", a mission to a
site on the farside. But the astronauts on the surface got blasted by a
solar flare and thus got sick and died. Don't know how the guy in the
CM survived it, maybe he was behind the Moon (on the night side) and the
flare was less than a half hour?)? But this was fiction. But maybe the
writers forgot to ignore this Apollo 18. More likely ASTP was counted
by mistake instead...

That sounds like the plot of James Michener's "Space".

....That was an an adaptation of Michener's "Space", which was about as
fetid as one might expect of an adaptation of the biggest pile of
human feces put to print about the Space Race before Maxson mopped his
first stall out at Lockmart.

I doubt they even knew it was on the air. Nobody watched it.

....There's been lots of debate over the years about the Apollo
numbering scheme. Depending on which version you go by, ASTP is
either:

* Apollo 18, if you ignore Skylab's three Apollos.
* Apollo 21, if you count Skylab's three Apollos.

....And that's only if you don't get into whether A2-A4 actually
counted. As for me, I tend to side with A18 as the real designator,
although I do see the validity of calling it A21. Either way, the
blame is on the PAO for not getting things clarified as they should
have :-P

James Michener's "Space".
Read the book; never saw the miniseries.
I thought "Space Cowboys" had problems as far as reality went till I
rewatched "Armageddon" a few days back.
Dear God...what's wrong in that movie?
What's right in it?
That's a far, far, shorter list.
Where's "Marooned" when you need it?

Oh, Dear God!
Bruce Dern was back in space!
Get him out of the ship before he kills you all!
"This damn thing has mildew on it..."
"What's wrong with mildew?....God made mildew like He made the trees and
forests! And now you want us to kill the mildew, and all the other
little things that live in the world!
You know why? You know why?!
Because you aren't even alive yourself...you're less alive than that
mildew...I saw a little girl once, and she'd never seen mildew...THINK
ABOUT THAT! A little girl who's never going to see mildew in her entire
life!" Very Happy

13 hours?!
It might have made a good 4 to 6 hour miniseries at most; but "Lord Of
The Rings" this thing ain't. :-D
