The "Cit des sciences" museum in Paris, France (French homepage here:
http://www.cite-sciences.fr/francais/indexFLASH.htm) is currently featuring
an exhibit on Nanotechnology.
The purpose of this exhibit is educational and scientific.
The intro page to the Nanotechnology exhibit in English is here:

My animation of Robert A. Freitas Jr.'s dermal display from his book
Nanomedicine Volume 1: Basic Capabilities is included in the exhibit which
you can go to directly by clicking here:

That's a nicely done animation!

Of course Bob's idea should be considered only as an attention-getting
example of what is possible, not what would actually be done. For
example, there is no reason to use a dermal display when one can just as
easily design a system that directly manipulates the optic nerve to
provide the host with what is known in the avionics world as a "heads up"
display (i.e. display appears overlayed in the person's field of view.)

And one could also create a system that directly manipulates the
auditory (cochlear) nerve to provide direct audio alerts and information
to the host.

But the dermal display has an advantage in that it grabs a person's
attention to some of the unusual possibilities of nanomedicine and
nanotechnology.

(And then there is the dermal "blue screen of death" condition, wherein
you have to reboot yourself. Wink Or suddenly seeing the real-time heart
monitor flat-line - that'll get your attention! Smile )
