Does anyone know about pediarchies?

"Pediarchy" (World Book dictionary definition): "a society or culture dominated or ruled by children"

It would be nice to know the history and customs of such societies. I would also love to know if any still exist somewhere in the world today. It seems like a little known and under-researched area. I cannot find any documentation on the subject. Any light thrown on the phenomenon will be very welcome.

Wasn't the Maya culture supposed to have been run by teenagers?
