Hi all,

I have a usb gps device that i am running off of a laptop (xp). I am
running some experiments where I drive some path through my local
environment (several km), along this path i stop at a set of 30 or so
points and take a measurement. At each of these measurement points I
would like to record my position using the gps output. Is there any
free software or an easy method for capturing the nmea data off the
COM port in this way, i.e. i click a button and the software grabs my
current location and stores it? Maybe there is software that
continously records and I could add a filter to grab the lastest
position? A Matlab interface would be ideal, but not necessary....

At the end of the day I will want to map these points, but I think
this step is probably easy once I have the points. Thanks for any
suggestions,

Kev

No my device is pretty basic. There are no buttons, its a small
module (about 1.5 inch diameter oval shape) with an LED light
signifying if it is receiving, no buttons, no screen, connects
directly into the usb port of my laptop where it sends the NMEA data
to my COM4 port.

What are you using to view the NMEA data stream?

Can you copy-paste the NMEA string just received over to another program?

GPSnmea http://vancouver-webpages.com/peter/idx_nmeaprog.html
formats the NMEA nicely. It might have some other useful tools.

Does your GPS not have a "mark" function button?

You could look at OziExplorer, not free but very reasonable. You can
download a trial to evaluate.

Have a look at the free program GPSU at http://www.gpsu.co.uk It may well
do what you want.

These two links have software that will build a track from the NMEA data
and let you look at/analyze/edit the track data later:
