Growing numbers of Britons retiring to Florida or the Mediterranean
are well placed to keep fish on the menu - and fight the effects of
ageing into the bargain.

Health benefits linked to oily fish have been known for decades, but
recently interest has focussed on dementia. Two recent research papers
showed that fish oils slowed the advance of early stage Alzheimer's
disease.

In the Framingham Heart Study, US researchers working for the National
Heart, Lung and Blood Institute followed 899 elderly people over nine
years.

In all 99 participants developed dementia, 71 of whom who contracted
Alzheimer's. But those with the highest levels of omega-3
polyunsaturated fatty acid, found in fish, were 47 per cent less
likely to develop dementia and 39 per cent less likely to develop
Alzheimer's. Those with the highest levels of omega-3 ate fish three
or more times a week.

In the other study, of 204 patients with Alzheimer's, Swedish
researchers found that omega-3 slowed decline in mild cases of the
disease, but had no effect in severe Alzheimer's.

The rationale behind these results is unclear. While the omega-3 has
been shown to help prevent fatty deposits, or plaque, developing
around the heart, an equivalent benefit has not previously been shown
in relation to the brain. However Prof Gunter Siegel, of Berlin
University, has recently demonstrated that similar plaque-prevention
occurs in the brain.

But this was under laboratory conditions on preserved brain tissue and
blood vessels. Prof Siegel said: "These findings bring hope to the
millions of men and women approaching late middle age who cite
Alzheimer's disease as one of the biggest health worries and may
already be experiencing the mild memory loss and declining brainpower
associated with ageing.

"The results are quite clear but do need to be confirmed in a clinical
trial." Prof Siegel is now recruiting patients whose cholesterol
profile puts them at higher risk of developing dementia.

As soon as one sees the term "seafood" one knows the article is pure
gibberish with MAYBE a little base.

All of the advantages listed are only available in about 1/5 of all
"seafood", if that.

BUT, If you have any extra Crab, Lobster or Shrimp, I will take it off your
hands.

Oh, yes, Whale is not a fish.

Seafood, of any kind, is extremely healthy. It is *real* food and
fresh to boot. Chock full of real nutrients.

Seafood is more than "fish".
MANY have negative reactions to non-fish seafood.
MANY have allergic reactions to non-fish seafood.
To some, non-fish seafood is deadly.
To some, non-fish seafood reduces the immune system.

So, that being said, I have to get back to my shrimp cocktail.

YES
BUT
When an article talks of the advantages or disadvantages of "seafood", the
article is bogus, at best.

I don't have a problem with them saying fish is good for you. I
suspect it is. I'm more bothered that the FDA has said that many
larger fish at the top of the chain should not be eaten by pregnant
women and babies. Then they tell you weell, light tuna is still OK.
Tuna is NOT a small fish and I haven't heard anything about how the
tuna avoid eating the smaller fish and collect up the mercury like the
other large fish. I wory that this usually means everyone should
beware of mercury in the fish.

I suspect that the recent announcement that fish is good for your
child's IQ is prompted by the industry that has lost money on people
being concerned about mercury.

For me, I stick with Dover Sole or other smaller fish, and only
once a week.

Yes, tuna is large.
The mercury scare is WAY overblown (at least from seafood). If one is
really hyper about it, ocean based Salmon is about the safest.
Even Sole, one could do themselves a favor by checking that it is not farm
raised, even ocean pen farms.
STILL
All of the pluses for fish far outweigh any negatives from mercury.

Despite common blather, here is a rating of protein sources including
positives in the essential oils. Note that mercury is the LEAST of worries
in any of these including vegetable protein foods.

1. Fish of any kind
2. Lamb / Mutton
3. Beef
4. Other seafood
5. Pork
6. Chicken
7. Turkey
