I have my first baby chickens! Chicks, I should say!
I've had chickens for about 18 months now, but only the silkies have
successfully hatched any of their own eggs. My hens are all the kind
that don't sit any more. I've tried repeatedly to put some of the big
eggs under the silkies, but something has gone wrong every time. I've
had two silky hens sitting on eggs since December sometime - I was
really daft and didn't write the date down. Eventually I had to remove
the eggs, but they stayed sitting on the empty nests, and so I gave them
more eggs to sit on. I realise (now) that that isn't very wise, but I
did it. Won't do that again.
Anyway!!!
Yesterday morning my other half cam running excitedly into the bedroom,
and all he could say was CHICKS CHICKS CHICKS!!
lol
And so we spent the morning watching 5 (of the 6) eggs gradually
appearing under her, all wet and yucky, and now all fluffy and cute.
And she's so proud, and the first thing she did today was take a dust bath.

Delightful little miracle isn't it? :-)
I never tired of hatching chicks...
It's one thing I really miss about keeping chickens and ducks. <sigh>

First hatchings are very special. Subsequent ones are exciting too but not
exactly the same, it's like having babies ... and grandchildren. In the case
of the latter the novelty does wear off ...

I don't have children, and now I'm too old, so won't experience those
novelties.
I am going to be breeding bulldogs, as soon as the bitch arrives. Maybe
I'll have something similar then.

Yes, :-)
The one bird I kept was one of 4 that I hatched in an incubator.
I also let the roosters set on eggs a couple of times to raise meat
birds, and sold a few chicks at the feed store.
The picture of an emu chick on feathersite.com is a picture that I
donated to the site. Same for the newborn and 2 week old frizzled cochin
bantam snapshot.

If you do, just make sure that you get "tame" bloodlines. It's been
proven with emus (and other birds) that personality can be genetic.
Make sure the parents are tame birds.
Emus are a lot of fun if you have the space, and they are also delicious.

They will chase and stomp any dogs that get into their pen.
Emus HATE dogs! Even Pauli, my tamest bird, will make a real effort to
stomp a dog.
A stray that dug under my fence to go after my chickens once discovered
that the hard way. Lucky for him he had someplace to cower and hide.
The emus were having a fit!
The emu pen surrounded the chicken yard on 3 sides. The 4th side was
patrolled by my _own_ dogs.

Well, that's not strictly true, it's just that breeders
don't like to take the chance. Our last bulldog, which was
a pet, but was covered by another pedigreed dog, had no
problem at all. I'm not quite sure whether we'll take the
chance when the time comes, or not. It's going to be a
while, anyway, as she's just had a litter at the current
breeder's premises. Not sure how many litters a bitch can
safely have.
well, i prefer no more than one per year, but i'm
conservative that way. gives the bitch lots of time to heal &
regain tone.
also, i think Amy's in the US & the AKC standards for
bulldogs are not the same as the UKCs, etc. i *think* the
European standard for bulldogs is a little healthier than the
US standard.

Just because a dog has a pedigree does not mean it is correct. A correct
bulldog will have a large head and (relatively) small hips. Many bulldogs
have no sense of smell, so artificial inseminations are common (the stud
can't tell the bitch is in heat). A bitch should not be bred more than once
per year. Having a C-Section will cause scar tissue in the abdomen, so this
will probably limit the total number of litters she can conceive. MPO is
that this breed has become so extreme that it is abusive to even consider
producing more of them. I think the Standard should be rewritten to
describe something that is not such a crime against nature.

Even French Bulldogs have these problems (I know, I used to work for a
French Bulldog breeder), and they are not nearly as extreme.

A quick skim over the 3 standards reveals the UKC to be the most extreme:
"The skull is very large. The circumference, taken in front of the ears,
measures at least the same as the height of the dog, measured from the
shoulders to the ground."
The AKC and British Kennel Club standards appear to be substantially
similar.
