Good evening

A while back I came across report NASA-CR-110263 on NTRS. It appears
to be the independant assesment by Bellcom to decide between the P&W
SC engine and the rival Rocketdyne plug nozzle.

I had always thought you'd have to be crazy to want to go SC but it
represents a good description of how to convince people otherwise. One
question I would love to have answered is with hindsight is there
really no interaction between the preburners and the MCC downstream
(one of the claimed design benefits of SC).

I can post a more detailed summary if there is any interest. I have
posted here as although its a general item of space history it relates
specifically to why STS is as it is.

Caveats
The SC engine P&W pitched is not the one that was built. The plug
nozzle Rocketdyne pitched is not the ususual design people who have
heard of these engines would expect.

Max Faget in a NASA History Project interview said Marshall "Wanted
the challenge" of SC. This could therefor be an after the fact rubber
stamp excercise. However it appears that Bellcomm's assesment of the
Apollo computer was what swung the decsion in favour of the MIT design
over a version of the Saturn GNC. They seemed fairly impartial in that
case.
