Guys, if you've been following the news, there has been a wave of
deadly school shootings in america during the past one-two weeks. For
info see :
http://cozybeehive.blogspot.com/2006/10/school-shootings-galore_02.html

As I look at these events, I try to understand what makes what makes
some monstrous people kill, and why they target schools? Its hard to
rationalise their behaviour, because they act beyond the norms of
normal people. What makes people kill? Are their minds different really
from ours? Where is the damage done?

Thanks,

Ron

Hello, I think it would be helpful to understand the background of
people who act out such behaviour. Usually there are some clear
indications of where things went wrong in their childhood - this is
not the excuse their actions, but to try and gain an understanding so
that we may do our best to ensure such events don't happen in the
future. Unfortunately, since this in almost generational, then what we
might do now to improve society will not reflect for many decades -
so it certainly is not politically expedient. A brief look at
Hitler's background reveals severe childhood dysfunction.

So once this sort of personality is created, then why is it acted out
in the way it has been? Anger and vengeance would be major driving
forces, and a feeling of loss of hope and no future. If these people
had hope for the future, then they would not kill themselves or risk
being incarcerated for the rest of their lives. Vengeance is a
biological adaptation from our ancestry, there is a "hardwired"
feature that gives us pleasure when we are successful in a vengeful act
- there are plenty of people acting out vengeful acts every day
around us, but these people have hope for the future and do not
gravitate to extreme actions.

So what must be done? We need a softer, caring society where children
and young adults are brought up in a secure, nurturing environment -
its as easy as that.........

And by the way, one look into the middle-east and it is easy to see the
anger that is a result of children and young adults being traumatised
on a daily basis - even if there were "peace" in the middle-east
immediately, it would take a generation before all the anger had
dissipated. Regards Miles

I could not have said it any better. I'm new to this group, my name is
Lauren. It is always a horror when things like this happen and it is
very hard to even show any pity or sympathy for the shooters
themselves. I would say I show sympathy because I am intrested in what
it takes to compose a person like that and ways to understand their
thoughts. I read a book once where it said if we were to create an
environment that will best produce persons with Borderline Personality
Disorder, america would be close to ideal. I do not believe these
shooters have BPD, but it just shows how children are being raised and
subjected to. With a tramatic or terrorized childhood mixed with
genetics we can only expect to produce such persons. It will take
generations to change thing even if we started now, which we are not
making enough of an effort to do.
