I supervise a prison library, and an inmate has asked questions we are
unable to answer with the resources available. Can anyone help with the
following questions, which came from a convicted sex offender,
regarding chemical castration (depo provera)?

(1) The inmate believes the first use was in Denmark, and that the
first study, also in Denmark, showed a 15% or less recidivism rate.
What later studies have been made, especially in the US?

(2) Were any studies done in connection to Florida's enactment of FS
794.0235, which allows chemical castration, although to date it appears
not to have been implemented?

(3) Is chemical castration (with or without depo provera) being
actively used in any states, and if so, is there any statistics,
medical info, or data on recidivism? As of 7-97, California, Texas, and
Montana appear to have had statutes in place.

(4) What, if anything, is the concensus opinion of the psych community
regarding the long term success of chemnical castration?

(5) Has any studies been made of a combination of traditional
psychotherapy and chemical castration?

(6) Finally, are there any known inherent problems with chemical
castration, and have there been any constitutional challenges to the
statutes?

I lot to ask, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
