We recently upgraded from Maple 5 to Maple 10, and I'm getting quite
frustrated from the "2D Math Input".

I find the regular Maple Input MUCH easier and faster to enter, but
for some reason I can't make it default.

When I enter a new line, I can choose "Maple input" from the selection
box in the toolbar, or hit Ctrl+M, but every new line it's back on "2D
Input" again. When I change the "Input display" setting in Tools,
Options, Display and then either click on Apply on Session or Apply
Globally, it doesn't seem to make any difference at all.

If you change something else, and click Apply Globally, does that
work? If not, perhaps you do not have write permission for wherever
Maple wants to write the information.

If you are not forced to work with mw sheets (=standard) use the
usual mws sheets (=classical)

fyi, The new maple, maple 11, is coming out in 2 weeks.

http://www.maplesoft.com/products/Maple11/new/Pro/index.aspx

According to the information on Maplesoft website, there alot of
improvements made to the interface. The new interface is called "smart
document". I am planning on upgrading to Maple 11 as soon as it is out. I
am like you, not too happy with the new Maple 10 interface and still use the
classical interface. Even though I would have prefered to enter the
equations using the new interface because they look like real math, but I am
confused by all the modes it has and why it sometimes seem to execute a
statement and sometimes not when I hit return.

So if you can wait 2 more weeks and check out Maple 11, hopefully it should
have a much better interface. It looks good on the web site :)

Thanks, I will certainly check it out!

I suggest the following:

Go to the Options dialog (Tools->Options on Windows/Linux, Maple 10-
Preferences on Mac).
Under "Display" set "Maple Input" to "Maple Notation".
Under "Interface" set "Default format for new worksheets" to
"Worksheet".
Click "Apply Globally" and restart Maple.

Maple 10 should start up with essentially the same worksheet interface
as Maple 9.5 and earlier versions.

Hey thanks a lot, chancing the default format did the trick! Worked
like a charm!

If it doesn't, then as G. A. Edgar observed there is probably an issue
with file permissions in your home directory, ie: Maple can't write to its
configuration file. This file is ~/.maple10rc on Linux and
"~/Library/Preferences/Maple 10 Preferences" on Mac. I forget where it
is on Windows, can anyone post its location ?

It's certainly not the file permissions in my case.
But just in case: "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Maple10.ini"

Applying globally seems to work, also for the input setting: when I
restart Maple and go to the settings again, it's still on "Maple
input". But the actual interface insists on using Math input
nonetheless :(

I have administrator rights and don't use any write permissions, so I
don't think that can be the problem.

The Maple 11 interface is similar to Maple 10's, and the original
poster will likely encounter the same issue. I suggest the following:

Go to the Options dialog (Tools->Options on Windows/Linux, Maple 10-

Under "Display" set "Maple Input" to "Maple Notation".

Under "Interface" set "Default format for new worksheets" to

is ~/.maple10rc on Linux and "~/Library/Preferences/Maple 10
