Is the USA turning into an Evil Empire?

Most people would agree that the US is turning more and more into an 'Evil
Empire'. This Administration holds a grudge against everyone who doesn't play
'by their rules' and really goes *after* the ones that don't. Sure it has happened
before but the difference with this administration is that they go after *everyone*
they hold a grudge against, and they won't stop until they get you.

This has created an atmosphere of fear and doubt, particularly amongst journalist
who are reluctant to criticize the Administration or publish stories which
may offend it. Some (Newsweek) even *retract* stories which they have published
after coming under huge pressure from this Adminstration. I see this undermining
of the free press as the end of democracy as we know it.

Conclusion: The US is turning into an Evil Empire and, by definition, Evil
Empires must be destroyed!

I certainly can't argue with that; the evidence against us is quite
damning. It's a pity too, because about half of the voting residents of
the US oppose what's going on. But sadly, that's not enough.

Perhaps we need to somehow convince massive numbers of Canadians to move
to the U.S. to help counteract the right-wing nut jobs... but I can't
think of any reason why a sensible Canadian would do that to himself,
except perhaps to better the world as a whole.

But wow, this thread was off-topic to begin with, and I've just made it
worse. Sorry about that. I just can't pass up the opportunity to
apologize to the rest of the world for my country's evils. Please
remember that many Americans do not support our government's recent
atrocities.

Now, let's not make things worse. With that attitude, you're just like
the Bush administration, thinking that by bombing small countries into
the Stone Age you can squash terrorism -- when in reality, that just
guarantees fervent anti-American sentiment for generations to come
(leading to *greater* threat of terrorism which, conveniently, helps
maintain the Republican's fear-based popular support).

It's certainly apparent that the forces in power are doing everything
they can to consolidate that power and squash opposition, but I think
it's still likely that they will fail, and voices of reason will again
prevail. It's not time for revolution yet.

The prison scandals have caught me off guard. They have happened in more
than one country, so I think these prison scandals go fairly high up,
possibly to Bush himself. I don't know why this administration would do
that.

In the case of Iraq, there are two military strategies that would have been
superior to the one chosen.
1. Don't fight at all.
2. Overthrow Saddam Hussein and leave immediately.

The initial war went well, but the rebuilding effort has been a complete and
total disaster. The administration no longer calls it rebuilding. I don't
know how Iraq's democracy is going to pan out, but I would expect them to
elect someone who is anti-American. The other problem is that our Muslim
allies are hated by their own people. That would make it hard to find any
Muslim allies in the future.

Insurgents are killing police. If you were to unleash the police, they
might kill the insurgents for you. The police may engage in oppression
similar to Saddam Hussein's oppression, but the insurgents need to be
killed.

In the case of Iran and North Korea, it may be worthwhile to take opposite
approaches -- Attack Iran and make friends with North Korea. We would like
for North Korea to give up its nukes, but that may be an impossible dream.
The next goal would be to prevent them from doing anything bad with them.
In negotiations, try to push them towards democracy.

If we attacked Iran and tried to do too, we would lose. A narrowly focused
goal is achievable. The narrowly focused goal would be to take out their
nuclear facilities. It appears that diplomacy won't work.

Actually, in the case of Afghanistan, we bombed it *out* of the Stone
Age. But don't let reality get in the way of your political
insipidity, Joe.

A friend of mine commented several years back, "Washington is turning
us into a third-world country." I've been watching since for a good
disproof, and I haven't seen any.

Apparently, you have no experience with actual third-world countries.
