Smart dust paves way for micro-robots

Tiny crystals of 'smart dust' developed by U.S. scientists may be a
first step to making micro-machines that can detect biological and
chemical agents, or disease-causing microbes.

George Whitesides has done and published extensive research on systems
rendered self-ordering by relative surface energies vs a medium or
interface of media. He has spontaneously assembled macroscopic
flawless LED arrays including their wiring by diddling with
surface-derivatized GaAs particles. He can build pre-determined
architecture by shaking. He doesn't amke any claims about "robots"
because there aren't any to be claimed.

What you have referenced is nothing more than parlour tricks. It's a
two-hour undergrad lab experiment.
