With Bush supposedly announcing a new space agenda next week, what's
being overlooked is the private sector. While Bush, his opponents,
proxmires, etc arguing about the cost and why or whether we should go
out into space, the private sector is moving along.
Spacedev, Kistler, the X Prize, Scale Composite and the rest will
still be around while Bush's trial balloon may or may not become law
and reality. His proposal may wind up just like his dad's Mars
announcement.
Today's NASA will probably find a way to mess up this proposal.
Remember once NASA said it would cost $500 billion for a Mars mission
under Bush I's proposal, that died quickly.
I'm curious to see what kind of budget number NASA will come up with
for this Bush space agenda. With their current track record, it'll be
something that will cause sticker shock.
And here's today's NASA spiritual orientation:
"I'm not sure you could get the lunar module (of 1969) approved for
flight today. The mission would probably be too risky," Milt Heflin,
head of NASA's flight director's office, told Reuters.
