The practice of grave goods in many ancient cultures is variously
interpreted as genuine belief in an afterlife. The goods accompanying
the deceased to the afterworld...
What did the graverobbers make of the fact that the goods were still
there to be robbed and why did the ruling castes take such pains to
ensure the security of their graves when they believed that the goods
would travel with them?

Two things occur to me:

(1) It seems likely that the grave robbers didn't share the beliefs of
those people whose graves they robbed.

(2) That (maybe) the idea behind grave goods wasn't that they would
physically be transported into the afterlife, but that their "essence"
or "spirit" would accompany the "spirit" of the dead person.
