My girlfriend has a Programmable Interface Controller...and I'm always trying to re-program it.

Bad idea. You do have to sleep, sometime. :)

Conclusion, thermostats and people are both intelligent...(whatever 'intelligent' means).
They both have PIC and act according to instructions contain within.

A thermostat can't call the cops

if a thermostat has a (PIC) Programmable Interface Controller, why could it not be programmed to call the cops?

Have you ever programed a PIC, or designed an approved telcom
interface?

I already mentioned my girlfriends PIC...do I need a USB stick?

The point is not that we are "programmed." The point is that we can
choose to override the program if we choose. Sometimes in a stupid
way; you've seen people out there in the cold wearing shorts and tee
shirts and in Japan they wear suit coats on the hottest day in summer.
But we can choose not to follow the programming. The thermostat has no
choice, it HAS to do whatever it's programmed to do.

How is it, then, that kids run around in all weathers wearing much the
same thing - depending on current fashion, this could be T-shirts and no
coat or it could be fleece-lined hoodies, but come rain or shine, cold
or hot, they're not going to put on/take off their "uniform".

That depends on what you consider cold. After a winter at the US
Army cold weather research center in the '70s, some of us could work
outdoors at -20F for a couple hours at a time with no ill effects.

I am now heat intolerant, and wear shorts and tee shirts year round.
I have only but on a long sleeve shirt or light jacket a couple times in
the last five years, yet I see people in Central Florida in winter coats
when it hits 70F. It is supposed to be 25 degrees in the morning. I
might wear long sleeves.
