I've posted bright ideas on how Israel could have done a better job
in the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War. There's my bright idea for the Gaza
Offensive:
Infiltration Tactics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infiltration_tactics
This might make sense for an urban environment like Gaza.
You'd start off with the same massive precision air attack as IRL.
You'd also open up mine fields as needed with fuel-air bombs. Then the
infiltration teams would move in mounted on motorcycles and armored
Hummers. You'd do it at night using night-vision equipment. They'd have
GPS to find their way around in the city and communications equipment to
call in fire.
The biggest part of the time, they'd call in fire on targets they'd
found. Some smaller things they could deal with on their own. They
might open the way for some heavier units.
One thing you'd do is send in seismic teams to locate tunnels.
They'd use seismographs and magnetometers to find tunnels, sort of like
looking for oil. This would be difficult under combat conditions but
doable with enough training. You'd then destroy them with ground-
penetrating bombs or by pumping acetylene in at openings and then
detonating it.
ObSmn: The Israeli naval forces would play the same role as in CAST
LEAD, providing sustained, precise firepower.
Under this scenario, you might do a better job of eliminating
Hamas' military capability and have fewer civilian casualties, but you'd
probably have a lot more Israeli casualties.
Let's call this Operation ZUMWALT.
Thoughts?

[snip of a somewhat valid, but misnamed, operational idea]
I don't call this "infiltration tactics" but a "deep spearhead penetration".
Can be an infiltration if one restrict this to motorcycle infantry
supported by *not* close support (attacking the general communications
network or flank avenues to the infiltration axis far enough to avoid
raising attention to the operation, and generally negating intelligence
& reaction on and against the infiltration)
Also this action should be aimed to key targets (GHQ, HQ, tactical
vantage points, logistic pools &c.) and, most important, *prior* of the
main attack.
Note that, this is not the same thing of a commando raid, but a larger
scale operation aimed to weaken or disrupt the enemy forces, easing the
main effort (pitched battle/campaign ? I'm not sure that term still
apply to the current warfare thinking...)
Best regards from Italy,
Dott. Piergiorgio. |
