How do they do this?...

I have recently downloaded and installed stars down to the 18th magnitude
for my copy of Stellarium. The number is staggering at way over
100,000,000 stellar beauties depicted on the planetarium. What gets me is
that if any of the stars are clicked on, even the ones at say a magnitude
of 17.95, at least some information is available for that star (other than
its position).

How can properties be determined for this vast number of stars? Certainly,
visual observation of each must be ruled out so what gives?

Apparently, it is the NOMAD catoalog

Most star catalogues have been produced by automatic scanning of
Schmidt plates taken during various sky surveys, starting with the
Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS) in the 1950's:

I use XEphem with the USNO A2.0 catalogue, which is about the biggest
you can download in is entirely, I think. However, you can access even
bigger databases, such as the USNO-B1.0 and NOMAD (each containing
more than 1 billion stars) from here:
