Whatever happened to the X-33 and low cost to orbit
space technology?

"The development on the RS-2200 was formally halted in early 2001
when the X-33 program did not receive Space Launch Initiative funding."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerospike_engine

Let's see, what happened in early 2001 to change NASA's direction
from single stage to orbit, to Lockheed's wet-dream of an endless
production line of shiny new Saturn V's on steroids???

Oh yes, President Bush took office in Jan, 2001.

From that day on, the terms...SSTO, spaceports and Space Solar
Power (SERT) (which was also canceled...in early 2001)
http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10202&page=1
vanished from the NASA vocabulary. Does anyone really believe
that sea-change in goals had anything at all to do with the merits
of the technology?

President Bush did the same thing with NASA he did everywhere.
He asked the big businesses involved what their wish-list was, and
that became policy. Lockheed wanted an end to SSTO because
it would send the launch industry business elsewhere. The military
wants a missile defense base on the south pole of the Moon, which
is the only place the Earth can be continually observed.

And Voila, like magic, The Vision for Space Exploration! Building
a lunar colony on the south pole of the Moon became policy.
Which requires one-shot (not reusable) hardware which is far
/too large and sophisticated / for the start-ups.

A marriage made in George Bush's corrupt corporate/military heaven.

Let's recap Lockheed stock prices around the relevant dates.
When Bush took office LM stock was...

Jan 01....$35/share
Jan 04.....$50/share (when the Vision was announced)
Jan 06 .....$135/share (peak share price)
Now 08....$15/share (when Obama won)

400% in just five short years....

I used to wonder why VP Cheney's wife was put on the Lockheed
Board of Directors. Hell, that wasn't nearly enough payback for the
amount Lockheed benefited from Bush/Cheney policy.
And the Vision came from Cheney btw.

What about Thiokol, another insider protected company?
Now called ATK?

Jan 01 ...$30/share
Jan 04.....$60/share
Jan 06.....$120/share
Nov 08....$75/share

Same 400% rise .....funny about that.

Right. And to the military black budget went NASA's
low cost to orbit technology.
Went...the manned space program.

Air Force's Secretive Space Plane
Nears Maiden Voyage
Oct 22.

"You would think that an unpiloted space plane built to rocket
spaceward from Florida atop an Atlas booster, circle the planet
for an extended time, then land on autopilot on a California
runway would be big news. But for the U.S. Air Force X-37B
project - seemingly, mum's the word."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20091022/sc_space/airforcessecretivespaceplanenearsmaidenvoyage

For just a moment place yourselves in the shoes of our previous
hawkish leaders. If NASA's entire manned space program were
to seemingly fall off the face of the planet, into the black hole
of secret pentagon spending, what might the 'enemy' think?

Wouldn't there be a need for a 'diversionary tactic'? A new program
to replace the 'missing' one? So that our intentions to militarize space
were hidden for a bit, giving us a head start in the military space
race with the Chinese that was about to start?

That's right, I'm...suggesting...the entire Vision for Space Exploration
was a ruse, never intended or expected to make it to the Moon.
But a diversion meant to give us a five or ten year head start
against the Chinese in the missile defense chess-game.

Now that they've accomplished that goal, lets go back to the future
and begin again where Bush left off. While the military replaces the
shuttle, let NASA start creating a long-term, worthy payload that
can give the new launcher a Noble reason for being.

And a future destined to swim in beauty.

NASA'S SPACE SOLAR POWER EXPLORATORY
RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY (SERT) PROGRAM

"The SERT program was established in FY 1999 and continued through
FY 2000 by U.S. congressional appropriation."
http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10202&page=1

Um, what was it that happened in 2001?
Oy yes, George Bush.

Well did you also notice that the nasa committee on science was chaired by a
military person?

Its always seemed to me that the military want to do their own thing, but in
this case I wonder if its doing it fairly secretly as there is no real
safety ethos at all, and when/if they do man it, it will be a bit like the
shuttle in its safety provision.
I cannot help wondering though if they are not misreading the public mood
here. Although you need safety features etc, it is rather a hazard of the
job to be at risk when you go to pilot a cutting edge vehicle. Nobody is
pulling the wool over eyes of anyone.

So? A position like that needs to have a lot of skills other than
just 'being a scientist'. Not that being a military person and being
a scientist are mutually exclusive.

What leads you to the mistaken belief the military has no safety
