It seems there is always plenty of money when it comes to death and
destruction.... but why can't we use space exploration as the
'perpetual growth' vehicle? With space ,the possibilities are
literally endless and the gains in new materials, etc is unlimited

Thats a lie. If it hadnt been for 9/11, there would not have been plenty of money for death and destruction.

Essentially because it makes a hell of a lot more sense to spend that
sort of money back here on earth instead on much more useful projects
like for example replacing coal fired power stations with nukes if you
believe that rising CO2 levels are a problem, heating with the electricity
from those nukes, stop wasting natural gas on heating and use it in cars,
develop viable thorium based nukes for export to countrys which dont
currently have nukes etc etc etc.

Back here on earth, the possibilitys are literally endless and a hell of a lot more useful too.

Pity about the immense cost of getting access to those there.

Defense spending is good spending. MItlitary research has provided
more breakthrus than anything else the government spends on, and this
is even more true if you include space exploration.

So many breakthrus, yet liberals always cry, "Lets give it to poor
people instead!"
