You say "hurricanes and cyclones release more energy"

But those hurricanes and cyclones do not cause the entire planet to
ring.

That's because they are,

1) Above the ground (water actually)
2) Not crust grinding on crust.
3) Not causing displacement of the mantle.
4) Not inducing wave action of/in the crust/mantle

As for being not sufficient.  Do you need the algorithm
to extrapolate the information that you desire?  A quick
scan of the table gives a measurement of 25 trinity type
bombs, which had a yield of 19,000 short tons or 17,000
metric tons, for a mag 7 earthquake.

Which comes out to 475,000 short tons and 425,000 metric
tons.  So, 475 kt or .475 Mt.

Though, these numbers don't jive with this site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale

But do with this one:

http://www.usgs.gov/faq/faq.asp?id=187&category_id=5

Chose your poison.

Thanks much, whereas that 0.5 MT seems about right. However, that
internal Earth shaking went on and on for quite some time, and those
waves from deep within seemed more like a 9 or 10 rather than a mag 7.

That's the beauty of waves, and their transmission.  You will notice that there
are, and have been, consistent aftershocks.  Each will add to the noise and
certain waves may even bounce around inside of the planet for quite some
time.  As with all waves, new waves may add onto other waves, increasing
their frequency or amplitude strength, decreasing same or, if the harmonics
are there, just help push things along.

The problem with those graphs is that the resolution is terrible.

But there were dozens to pick from, and they were all pretty much
flying off the charts for quite some time.

I'm thinking 100+ mt events took place, at depths over 500 km.

[quote:7393ee8b63]Those 600+ km deep ones were obviously shaking the entire Earth,
ringing it like a bell.
[/quote:7393ee8b63]
That's a bit of an overstatement.

[quote:7393ee8b63]
Were those deep ones of multi-hundred megatonnes, or perhaps gigatonne
class explosions?
[/quote:7393ee8b63]
No.

I'd prefer to think of it in terms of underground hamster farts. Explosions just does
not seem to be the proper perspective of looking at this type of energy release.
I'd wager the energy release is not in the tera range, pun intended.

I have some info here. You may do your own math with it.

Looks like those big wavy seismic charts that you'd posted a link to,

Can we get back to review those dates of October 5, 6, 7 and 8th?

It's the "whole Earth humming" that seems to suggest having those
100+GT (100+ gigatonnes of TNT) as seismic triggers taking place at
500+ km deep is pretty freaking spectacular seismic geology going on.

"Berkland has released his January earthquake window."
"The first seismic window of the year is only a little less potent
than last month's, which had the strongest tidal forces since 1993,
"said Berkland. "Jan. 08-15, 2009 is marked by Golden Gate tides of
8.9 ft. only a little below the max. possible range of 9.2 ft."

"The full Moon of Jan 10 is only 16 hours away from the 2nd closest
perigee of the year and 6 days after the Earth/Sun perihelion of Jan
4."

On average our Selene/moon contributes 2e20 N/sec of its Newtonian
tidal binding force, and that's only 55.5e12 kw.hr worth of applied
energy. Whenever Selene is aligned with the solar tidal force is
obviously much worse for us, and a bit worse yet if that alignment
also includes Jupiter or especially Venus.

Why are these extremely deep seismic events taking place at all?

Mega tonne, 100 megatonne or possibly gigatonne seismic events at 500
km deep shouldn't be taking place, unless caused by our moon.
