Given that Air Force Range Safety report, they will probably be _hoping_
it lands in the ocean... ;-)

Though come to think of it, how long did the Little Joe and Big

Do you mean Redstone and Big Joe?
Little Joe was a multi-solid-fueled rocket test vehicle for the Mercury
abort and recovery systems: http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/litlejoe.htm
[/quote]
No, I mean Little Joe and Big Joe. They were, after all,
rocket vehicles with a mighty loose connection to the actual intended
launch (Mercury on a Redstone, or Atlas), but allowed for the testing
of specific subsystems or procedures that maybe proved useful. The
Mercury-Scout launch has some parallel as well.

Big Joe was a boilerplate Mercury launched atop a Atlas D:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Joe_1
....that doesn't sound like a "mighty loose connection" to me.
Although "Big Joe" was the specific name for that test, it also was used
as a nickname for the Atlas booster for Mercury.

Mercury-Scout was just a orbiting transmitter to get the ground stations
up to speed on how to track the actual Mercury when it came along:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury-Scout_1
It had no relation to the Mercury spacecraft other than the name.

But the DOD is better and has more to waste.
