I consult newsgroups via Google, in my local library.
I've often searched this group, but I notice that now, even putting in
really common terms such as 'rct' and 'remineralize' doesn't bring up
any search results, whereas in the past, such terms would bring up
dozens.
Does anyone know what's happened? |

I don't have an answer, but I've heard much the same about searching
the google groups archives in other usenet groups.
I think there may be a workaround, but I don't know what it is.

However, if you go to the google groups homepage:
http://groups.google.com/
....and enter after your keywords the group name (sci.med.dentistry), you
should get a much greater number of hits.

Google groups has gotten worse and worse. It used
to be easy to search for relevant forum. There used
to and may still be a usenet archive on a European website.
As I recall one had to pay to post but one could read it for free.
These days one has persist, going down into the
searches to find much.
I think the big boys don't like the Usenet as it is
not completely controlled.
Google had better be careful or people will start using
Bing or something else. It is degrading and becoming more also

Sometime in the past year or so, our family had a little reunion and our
matriarch wanting a group picture was very disappointed because only
almost everyone was in the same place at the same time; note I wrote
"almost everyone", rather than "everyone". Certain relatives said,
"just photoshop the others in" .... and you'll have the whole family
pictured together ... no one will know the difference!"
Say what??????
Usenet can be a lot like photoshopping-in the missing faces or thinking
the picture is complete not realizing there are missing faces. Either
way, it takes a *long* time and requires a substantial volume of data in
order to actually have a good understanding about the ideas of others
who post to a particular group on particular subjects.
It's better to realize when something (someone) is missing than to
pretend that the image is complete if you want a quality snapshot of any
collection of individuals.
In the case of a group photo ... you shouldn't just photoshop in the
ones who couldn't be there just because you can so that the picture
looks the way you imagined it ...
Technology has given us many tools to shortcut life itself in many ways.
But in our rush to find quick answers and solutions to problems, it is
easy to forget that sometimes we need to be more patient in our quest to
understand the perspectives of others.

of promoting a more complete understanding of the subject being
discussed over three year's time.
I often think about "kw" and all the others who gathered for the group
photo taken in 1997. Some of them are still here and proud of it! Some
have died ... and some just quit posting or took on new identities and
continued "anonymously".

It's sort of like me just cutting out all the unnecessary words. But I
did mark "[cut]" indicating text removal. And in the digital world, all
the words are more than likely never really removed (read: lost);
they're just moved and misplaced until recovered at some later point in
time. ;-)

If anyone can find "PWMP55A at (no spam) prodigy.com by searching via Google/Google
Groups ... let me/us know.
The Great and Mighty Google does not believe this poster or post ever
existed; and therefore has no memory of kw's post in 1996.
So... I ask, is Google photoshopping-out and leaving the real image to
memory of those who were there at the time?
Hmmm ... sometimes this stuff just gives me reason to spend time
thinking about what probably doesn't matter to much of anyone else.
But, Google has, in effect, re-written history as though it is complete
when in fact, it only tells part of the story that is/was "us".
By choice, I have chosen to spend some of my time today doing this. No
one is forcing me... and no one is stopping me either.
In memory of those Google has forgotten,
