[...."But a few geeks with long memories remember the last time Google
assembled a giant library that promised to rescue orphaned content for
future generations. And the tattered remnants of that online archive are
a cautionary tale in what happens when Google simply loses interest.

That library is Usenet, a vast internet- and dial-up-based message board
system erected in 1980. Though moribund today, for decades Usenet was
the paper of record for the online world, and its hundreds of millions
of ³newsgroup² postings chronicle everything from the birth of the web
to the rise of Microsoft, as well as more trivial matters. ..."]

The attempt to "Netcant" was the idea of a couple of longtime smd'ers
yet it was never fully realized because of technological warfare ...
However, when I look at "that book" on the shelf, I know in my heart
that the effort to preserve and protect a part of contemporary society
was honorable.

This article (link above) drives the point home for me.

Wow, great article and thanks for posting the link.

The Usenet archive was one of the most useful things on the internet. As
the Wired article says, it just kept on degrading.

I've had to jump through ever increasing hoops to get useful search
results. I had to download to my computer and use that local copy of the
old style "Advanced Usenet Search" page. Otherwise, web pages were
prominent in the search results.

Then I had to start specifying specific newsgroups, or else user created
personal Google Groups (spam factories, plain and simple) dominated the
search results.

Finally, all such dodges failed to produce usable results. The archive was
dead, and complaints to Google were ignored.

Possibly, some good news. Google and Wired claims that the Wired article
got Google's attention, and they are fixing the broken database.

Time will tell, as I find Google's "Usenet search is broken? We have never
heard that before!" less than 100% convincing.

Next they will be claiming that they had no idea that spammers are using
Google Groups to post spam to Usenet.

Due to spam, I'm filtering all Google Groups posters.

Sometimes Google seems quite determined to kill the Usenet. After all, it
is something that they can't totally control & can't really sell ads on; so
it must be bad!
