One major entertainmnent manufacturer has released Lifi Plasma lamp
based products whilst another major entertainmnent manufacturer has
decided to drop development of Lifi Plasma lamp based units saying
they have failed in `taming` the source and that other manufacturers
have found the same?

Anyone know what is going on?

Thanks
Adam

P.S. linkedin dosn`t look a great usenet substitute

I have no information about this manufacturer's decision, so
what follows is speculation.

a) The LiFi has a completely different form factor than a
conventional lamp. The light source itself, which is quite
small, is surrounded by a hefty heat sink and thermal
radiator, as would be expected.

b) The system uses a separate RF "ballast" that must be
connected to the lamp assembly by coax cable. A typical
fixture manufacturer would not have the ability to shorten
or lengthen this cable, as they may do with the standard
wire pair used for halogen lamps.

c) The CCT of all the LiFi lamps I see listed by Luxim is
quite high.

d) The warm-up time, while short for a discharge lamp, is
longer than that of halogen incandescent lamps.

Perhaps the manufacturer who decided to not use the LiFi was
not prepared to deal with these differences.
