Hi All:
This may have been asked before, but I have never seen it so here
goes....With all of the Sci- Fi shows out there such as Stargate Atlantis,
Stargate SG-1, all of the Star Trek series and so on, why is it that nobody
ever brings up the subject of "God" or "A God"? I am not talking about the
Goa'uld from the television show Stargate SG-1 pretending to be God's but
the characters actually asking the "alien races" they find out there, "Is
there one divine supreme being in the universe?"
I know in the Star Trek series there was a recurring character named "Q".
This "entity" always took the form of a Human being and was as close to a
"God" as you could find. The "Q's" were indestructible, could not die, and
had complete control over EVERYTHING is the known universe such as time and
space, but I think everyone who reads this post understands what I am
asking. You don't have to be Jewish, Catholic, Muslim, Christian, Hindu or
any of the other hundreds of other religions out there. 97% of all
"religions" believe in some type of "supreme being" or "God". Obviously
it's not like a Science Fiction show could give the T.V. audience an actual
answer anyway, but it's never even touched upon as far as I have ever seen.
Maybe I am wrong. I know that if there were such thing as a "Stargate" (and
there really is one at area 51...don't tell anybody) or we were capable of
leaving our own galaxy and able to travel to other galaxy's millions of
light years from earth and we ran into other intelligent life forms, some,
but not all of my questions would be a) how long have you been here? b)
have you ever heard of earth or the milky way galaxy? c) do you have a
higher power or supreme being that you believe created you?
I am not sure how many people who read this newsgroup are into watching any
of these Science Fiction programs but there it is. i put the question out
there and maybe I can get some feedback.
Thanks to all who answer.

Plots are usually dependent on human fallibility. If you introduce
an infallible God, that only makes it harder to come up with a
decent plot. And then there is the problem of all of the religious
folk who will be offended. |

I think this has more to do with the theory that we ascribe things we
don't understand to higher entities and therefore don't have a real need
for a god the farer our knowledge develops. The races we find in science
fiction series are either at a lower technical level than we are, what
makes them in most cases believing in one or more gods, at the quite
same level as we are (but seldom), what makes some of them believing,
some not, like in our society, or on a technical much higher level than
we are. In this latter case, according to the theory in the first
sentence, these races know so much about science that they don't have
any need for gods any more. Being asked where they come from in some
series they just answer "We don't know. Before (xyz) there's no data
available."

Well, the whole problem with sci-fi as a god, its that the people
who originally developed the whole genre, is that they not only
took it themselves
to assert that *radio waves* themselves to be a demi-god,
and the idiots also took it upon thenselves to patent, and
copyright them.
Which is also why the peope who actually understand E-M and it's
applications
also took is took it upon themselves to develop DSP, Digital-
Terrain-Mapping,
Digital Electronics and Computers, Optical Computers, Laser
Mechanics,
Phasor Theory, Masers, Microwave Systems. Artificial Satellites,
GPS Constellations, Holograms, Autonomous Vehicles, Drones,
Fiber Optics, Cell Phones, On-Line Banking, CD, DVD, HDTV, RISC,
Parallel Processors, Microprocessors, Word Processors,
Removable Static Hardisk Memory. On-Line Publishing,
Post Ford Battery Systems, Terraforming, and Post GM Robotic
Systems.

TV shows have no interest in answering the question. Providing a
direct answer is likely to antagonize one section or another of their
audience. On the other hand, when such shows are made for a specific
segment, having a certain belief, their answers are likely to be
tailored to the audience, so again nothing new can be expected. When
they do deal with the subject, it tends to be done indirectly, using a
mixture of ideas so as to satisfy everyone. I don't watch any of the
shows mentioned here, but the same situation exists with regard to
movies.
Even if you meet a real alien you are able to communicate with, the
answer is unlikely to be taken as a final answer. If the answer
agrees with your expectation, there is nothing new gained. If it
doesn't, one is unlikely to change the opinion unless the aliens are
ragarded as vastly superior to oneself. But even in that case, there
is no guarantee that even they are not mistaken.
