“Fires out, yet Sancho?”

“Not yet, Quixote, the blaze in the forest is contained and the one by
the lake is out. Those firefighters are incredible.”

“They let the guesthouse burn and the garage will never be the same
for the smoke. Was that thunder, Sancho?”

“It was, Quixote. There go the firefighters down the valley again.
Must be another cluster of lightning strikes.”

“Holy Cow! Did you see that, Sancho? That lightning bolt landed in the
middle of that herd.”

“Killed half of them, Quixote.”

“Oh no, look, Sancho, another strike got the sheep. Do you hear that
crackling?”

“We should get inside, Quixote. These lightning strikes are getting
much worse--too much energy in the climate system.”

“Will you stop that, Sancho? Climate this, climate that. The dead
zones are getting bigger--climate change. The moose are dying--climate
change. I’m sick of it. Droughts, pestilence, extinction, sea level
rise--climate change.”

“People are getting hit by the increased dry lightning--climate
change--Quixote.”

“This damn planet has no respect for wealth and breeding.”

“You have no respect for the planet.”

“What is that supposed to mean, Sancho?”

“All you understand is preserving the economy.”

“And what’s wrong with that, Sancho?”

“It’s not the economy, stupid. As the planetary systems become more
foreign to our species, the foundation system for our economy, the
environment, will change. It becomes more chaotic. Your outmoded
economic system cannot cope with instability. It needs stability or at
least a linear variation over everything else.”

“Are you saying climate change is economic chaos, Sancho?”

“For you and yours, Quixote. For the rest of us, climate change is our
environment spinning out of control. And it’s cutting through your oil-
based economy like a knife through butter.”

“You’re an eco-terrorist, Sancho.”

“Quixote, your friends are the terrorists. And what’s worse? They know
they are doing wrong. And what do they do? Deny the truth. Eco-
terrorist, me? What for?”

“Calm down, Sancho. So we need to take the energy out of the changing
climate. Watch out for that lightning bolt!”

“It landed down the lane, in the school yard, Quixote.”

“Missed my property completely, thank God. So how do we take the
energy out of a climate spinning out of control, Sancho?”

“Gee, Quixote, I suppose we could cut the CO2 down to a rational
level.”

“Never, Sancho, it will hurt the economy. What are you laughing
about?”

“You know what economy matters, Sancho? Enough water, enough food, and
enough shelter. That’s the new economy.”

“Are we really in that much danger, Sancho?”

“An enlightened, Quixote. Can I bear it? I’m going out to dig some
more graves for the sheep.”
